Position Overview

The Lac La Ronge Indian Band is seeking qualified candidates for the role of First Nations Representative. This full-time position focuses on engaging with child and family services providers and addressing matters related to child welfare in accordance with applicable laws.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the primary liaison between the First Nation and child welfare service providers.
  • Uphold the rights and responsibilities of the First Nation as outlined in child welfare legislation.
  • Ensure that the needs of First Nations children, youth, and families are met, particularly in relation to cultural and historical contexts.
  • Foster and maintain significant cultural, familial, and community ties for children and families involved in the child welfare system.
  • Assist in the repatriation and reunification processes for children and youth in care.
  • Support First Nations families at risk of involvement with child welfare services, including those outside their home communities.
  • Provide assistance to First Nations youth and young adults transitioning from care.
  • Participate in administrative and court proceedings related to child welfare.
  • Access legal resources to advocate for the First Nation's interests in child welfare matters.
  • Respond to notifications under relevant child welfare laws.
  • Help families access preventive support services.
  • Support customary and kinship care arrangements.
  • Facilitate alternative dispute resolution processes.
  • Monitor agreements with child welfare providers regarding individual cases.
  • Collaborate in the development and evaluation of service plans for children and families.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Social Work, Law, Child and Youth Work, or a related field.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in social services, with direct experience with First Nations being an asset.
  • Knowledge of the Child and Youth Family Services Act and related proceedings.
  • Proficient in computer applications, including word processing and database management.
  • Understanding of Customary Care practices is advantageous.
  • Experience in Family Law and Alternative Dispute Resolution is beneficial.
  • Experience working with children, youth, and families is preferred.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and travel as needed.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation.
  • Ability to provide a Criminal Reference Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Respect for Indigenous cultures and traditions.
  • Capability to interpret legal documents and legislation.
  • Familiarity with case management techniques.
  • Experience working within a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with effective time management abilities.
