First Nations Child Welfare Advocate

Position Overview
The Lac La Ronge Indian Band is seeking qualified candidates for the role of First Nations Representative. This full-time position focuses on engaging with child and family services providers and addressing matters related to child welfare in accordance with applicable laws.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the primary liaison between the First Nation and child welfare service providers.
- Uphold the rights and responsibilities of the First Nation as outlined in child welfare legislation.
- Ensure that the needs of First Nations children, youth, and families are met, particularly in relation to cultural and historical contexts.
- Foster and maintain significant cultural, familial, and community ties for children and families involved in the child welfare system.
- Assist in the repatriation and reunification processes for children and youth in care.
- Support First Nations families at risk of involvement with child welfare services, including those outside their home communities.
- Provide assistance to First Nations youth and young adults transitioning from care.
- Participate in administrative and court proceedings related to child welfare.
- Access legal resources to advocate for the First Nation's interests in child welfare matters.
- Respond to notifications under relevant child welfare laws.
- Help families access preventive support services.
- Support customary and kinship care arrangements.
- Facilitate alternative dispute resolution processes.
- Monitor agreements with child welfare providers regarding individual cases.
- Collaborate in the development and evaluation of service plans for children and families.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in Social Work, Law, Child and Youth Work, or a related field.
- A minimum of three years of experience in social services, with direct experience with First Nations being an asset.
- Knowledge of the Child and Youth Family Services Act and related proceedings.
- Proficient in computer applications, including word processing and database management.
- Understanding of Customary Care practices is advantageous.
- Experience in Family Law and Alternative Dispute Resolution is beneficial.
- Experience working with children, youth, and families is preferred.
- Willingness to work flexible hours and travel as needed.
- Possession of a valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation.
- Ability to provide a Criminal Reference Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.
- Respect for Indigenous cultures and traditions.
- Capability to interpret legal documents and legislation.
- Familiarity with case management techniques.
- Experience working within a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with effective time management abilities.
