The Lac La Ronge Indian Band is seeking applications for a full-time position focused on child and family services:

First Nations Representative

The successful candidate will engage with child and family services organizations and participate in matters related to child welfare as dictated by applicable laws at the provincial, territorial, and federal levels.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as the primary liaison between the First Nation and child welfare service providers.
  • Uphold the rights and responsibilities of the First Nation in accordance with relevant child welfare legislation.
  • Ensure that the needs of First Nations children, youth, and families are prioritized, particularly those linked to cultural identity, land, and historical context.
  • Foster and sustain meaningful connections among families and communities for First Nations children and youth involved in the welfare system.
  • Facilitate the reunification of children and youth in care with their families and communities.
  • Support First Nations families at risk of involvement with child welfare services, including collaboration across different regions.
  • Assist First Nations youth with transition services post-majority.
  • Participate in administrative and court proceedings related to child welfare.
  • Access legal resources to advocate for the First Nation's interests in relevant proceedings.
  • Respond to notifications under applicable child welfare laws.
  • Help families access preventive support services.
  • Support customary and kinship care arrangements.
  • Provide or coordinate alternative dispute resolution methods.
  • Monitor agreements with child welfare providers regarding individual cases.
  • Contribute to the development and oversight of service plans in collaboration with child welfare providers.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in Social Work, Law, Child and Youth Work, or a related field.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in social services, with direct experience in First Nations contexts considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Child and Youth Family Services Act and related proceedings.
  • Proficient in computer applications, including word processing and database management.
  • Knowledge of Customary Care practices is an asset.
  • Experience in Family Law and Alternative Dispute Resolution is preferred.
  • Experience working with children, youth, and families is advantageous.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and travel as needed.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation.
  • Ability to provide a Criminal Reference Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Respect for Indigenous culture and traditions.
  • Aptitude for interpreting legislation and legal documents.
  • Familiarity with case management techniques.
  • Experience working within a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with effective time management abilities.
