Role: Vice President, Research/Chief Scientific Officer (CSO)

Reporting to the VP Research and Chief Scientific Officer (CSO), the Head of Research Services plays a pivotal role within the Research Services team, focusing on the execution of strategic research objectives.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensure the highest standards of quality in the Institute's research endeavors.
  • Collaborate closely with Institute researchers, trainees, and research personnel, while engaging with the broader cardiovascular research community.
  • Oversee pre-award support processes, manage external competitions, and lead internal grant review initiatives.
  • Direct all activities related to the Research Strategy for the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and the Ottawa Heart Institute Research Corporation.
  • Work in conjunction with the post-award finance and administration director to manage funded research projects throughout their lifecycle.
  • Supervise the Research Services team, ensuring adherence to research governance and administrative standards.
  • Support the internal Scientific Advisory Committee, manage scientist contracts, and conduct performance evaluations.
  • Oversee laboratory resource management, procurement, and strategic initiatives.
Strategic Contributions:

Support the strategic goals of the UOHI and OHIRC by:

  • Building diverse partnerships.
  • Providing a robust framework for strategic grant support.
  • Preparing financial plans and technical progress reports in alignment with funding policies.
  • Offering expert guidance on complex grant development issues.
  • Promoting the operational success of awarded grants.
Qualifications:

A university degree in health, sciences, or a biomedical field, or equivalent qualifications is required.

Minimum of ten (10) years of management experience in research administration, ideally within a healthcare, university, or research context.

At least three (3) to five (5) years of experience in leading efforts to secure additional research funding and managing a variety of research funding programs.

Recent experience in developing and implementing Research Services Strategies is essential.

Expertise in preparing, revising, editing, managing, and submitting grant proposals is crucial.

Knowledge of Canadian academic research organizations and health research funding agencies is preferred.

A highly motivated and innovative mindset is necessary to navigate challenges in a dynamic environment.

A clear understanding of pre-award development and post-award support processes, along with finance and budget administration, is essential.

  • Facilitating Innovation Hubs for multidisciplinary teams.
  • Managing internal funding competitions.
  • Serving as the secretariat for standing advisory committees.
  • Overseeing research core facilities and shared equipment.
  • Providing support to trainees and communicating with the research community.
  • Planning events.
