Position Overview

The Director of Sponsored Research Services plays a pivotal role in overseeing the strategic and operational facets of the University’s centralized pre- and post-award research administration. This position is accountable for ensuring excellence in research management while adhering to external sponsor requirements and institutional policies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Management of Sponsored Research: Lead the pre-award grant management processes for a substantial volume of applications, ensuring compliance with institutional and agency guidelines. This includes overseeing the negotiation and notification procedures for awards, analyzing terms and conditions, and managing post-award processes.
  • Support for Large-scale Research Projects: Provide strategic oversight and operational support for significant institutional grants, coordinating efforts across various departments to ensure successful implementation and compliance with agency requirements.
  • Internal Funding Programs: Direct the administration of internal research funding initiatives, managing budgets and peer-review processes to support researchers in securing external funding.
  • Training and Communication: Oversee university-wide training on research policies, ensuring faculty and staff are equipped with the necessary knowledge to maintain compliance. Facilitate effective communication regarding available support services.
  • Operational Framework Development: Establish and maintain a comprehensive policy framework for the responsible administration of research funding, ensuring adherence to external sponsor requirements and university regulations.
  • Human Resource Management: Lead a team in a dynamic environment, focusing on staff development, performance evaluation, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and collaboration.
  • Relationship Building: Cultivate strong partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, representing the institution’s interests and facilitating effective communication to enhance the research strategy.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience; an MBA or PhD is advantageous.
  • A minimum of 10 years in progressively senior roles within a research-intensive environment, with significant team leadership experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of pre- and post-award administration processes and compliance requirements.
  • Expertise in research contracts and negotiation, with a strong understanding of institutional risk.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Canada’s research funding landscape and federal funding agencies.
  • Proven ability to develop strategic plans and maintain relationships with funding sponsors.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong project management skills, with a focus on detail and problem-solving.
