The role of the Head of Legislative Affairs involves crucial responsibilities as part of the upper chamber of Parliament. Senators engage in the examination of legislative proposals, analysis of public policy, advocacy for significant issues, and facilitation of interparliamentary relations.

We seek a highly knowledgeable and experienced professional to assume the full-time role of Head of Legislative Affairs within the office of the Honourable Senator Mary Robinson.

The successful candidate will possess a strong background in policy matters, particularly those pertaining to agriculture, and demonstrate a keen understanding of challenges faced by rural communities across Canada.

The Head of Legislative Affairs will assist the Senator by conducting pertinent research, crafting comprehensive briefs, and offering informed recommendations aligned with the Senator's objectives.

In addition to overseeing the legislative and research activities of the Senator's office, there may be opportunities for travel alongside the Senator.

This position is classified as an indeterminate full-time role, indicating an employment agreement without a predetermined end date.

Qualifications:

  • A university degree from a recognized institution in political science, law, business, or a related field, or an acceptable combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Significant experience interacting with senior officials, parliamentarians, and media representatives.
  • Exceptional writing, research, analytical, and communication skills relevant to policy analysis and legislative processes.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the Senate's functions and the Senator's responsibilities, along with knowledge of the political landscape to provide strategic guidance and recommendations.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English is essential, with a working knowledge of French considered an asset.
