Position Overview


Under the supervision of the Finance and Research Services Manager, the Grants Financial Analyst will provide comprehensive financial assistance to the Research division within the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. The ideal candidate will engage in specialized projects such as the closure of grant activities, enhancement of internal billing processes, and the automation of reporting and monitoring tasks related to Research Finance deliverables. Ensuring data accuracy in the financial systems by updating activity attributes and budgets will be a key responsibility. The successful applicant will collaborate strategically with internal departments, research initiatives, and management to accomplish assigned projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establishing effective working relationships with Principal Investigators, Scientists, and their teams to facilitate the end-of-grant processes.
  • Executing grant closure activities required by Research Finance and external entities, including reconciliations, final billing, and budget adjustments.
  • Performing month-end responsibilities, such as preparing journal entries for internal billing and cost reallocations.
  • Overseeing and managing the general Research Finance communication channels.
  • Updating activity attributes and budgets within the financial management system.
  • Maintaining the list of deliverables for the Research Finance team.
  • Assisting the Accounts Receivable Department in the collection of outstanding invoices issued by Research Finance.
  • Promoting a workplace culture that values best practices, high standards, and innovation.
  • Conducting additional analysis and reporting regularly or on an ad-hoc basis to meet funder and management requirements for timely and accurate financial information.
  • Performing other relevant duties as assigned by management.
  • Supporting a diverse workplace that encourages teamwork and adheres to all applicable regulatory and legislative standards.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration from an accredited institution, or equivalent experience.
  • A professional accounting designation, such as CA, CMA, CGA, finalist, or equivalent experience.
  • Familiarity with GAAP and other financial standards, preferably in a PSAB context.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience is required.
  • Experience in a financial capacity within an academic research setting is advantageous.
  • Proven experience in financial reporting, preparation of financial statements, financial analysis, reconciliations, general accounting practices, and fiduciary responsibilities.
  • Strong analytical, problem identification, and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Ability to design, analyze, and prepare comprehensive financial reports.
  • Self-motivated and proactive, with a proven track record of organizing and prioritizing tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Excel and MS Office Suite.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong relationship-building and conflict resolution abilities.
  • Proficiency in computerized accounting systems and software applications, with a quick aptitude for learning new technologies.
  • Experience with Lawson Financial Systems is a plus.
  • Demonstrated accuracy and timeliness in work under tight deadlines.
  • Commitment to working with a diverse team in an environment that values diversity and equity.
  • Bilingualism (French/English) or proficiency in an additional language is a benefit.

Note: This is a full-time, permanent position not associated with any bargaining unit.
