Position Overview
Under the supervision of the Finance and Research Services Manager, the Grants Financial Analyst will provide comprehensive financial assistance to the Research division within the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. The ideal candidate will engage in various initiatives such as the closure of grant activities, enhancing internal billing procedures, and facilitating the automation of reporting and monitoring for Research Finance outcomes. This role is crucial in maintaining data accuracy by updating activity attributes and budgets as necessary. Additionally, the successful candidate will collaborate strategically with internal departments, research teams, and management to execute designated special projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Establishing effective working relationships with Principal Investigators, Scientists, and their teams to manage end-of-grant processes.
- Executing grant closure tasks mandated by Research Finance and external organizations, including reconciliations, final billing, and budget adjustments.
- Performing specific month-end responsibilities, such as preparing journal entries related to internal billing and cost reallocations.
- Overseeing and managing the general Research Finance communication channels.
- Updating activity attributes and budgets within the financial management system.
- Maintaining the list of deliverables for the Research Finance team.
- Assisting the Accounts Receivable Department in the collection of outstanding invoices issued by Research Finance.
- Promoting a culture that values best practices, high standards, and innovation.
- Conducting additional analysis and reporting regularly or on an ad-hoc basis to meet funder and management requirements for timely, accurate, and relevant financial data.
- Performing other relevant duties as assigned by management.
- Supporting a workplace that values diversity, encourages teamwork, and adheres to all applicable regulatory and legislative standards.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration from an accredited institution, or equivalent experience.
- A professional accounting designation, such as CA, CMA, CGA, finalist, or equivalent experience.
- Familiarity with GAAP and other financial standards, preferably in a PSAB context.
- A minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience is required.
- Experience in a financial capacity within an academic research setting is advantageous.
- Proven experience in financial reporting, preparation of financial statements, financial analysis, reconciliations, general accounting practices, and fiduciary responsibilities.
- Exceptional analytical, problem identification, and problem-solving abilities.
- Capability to design, analyze, and prepare financial reports.
- Self-motivated, proactive, and demonstrated excellence in organizing and prioritizing tasks in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
- Advanced proficiency in MS Excel and MS Office Suite.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with internal and external departments.
- Excellent relationship-building and conflict resolution skills.
- Proficiency in computerized accounting systems and software applications, with a quick aptitude for learning new applications.
- Experience with Lawson Financial Systems is a plus.
- Proven track record of accuracy and timeliness in work under tight deadlines.
- Demonstrates an ability and interest in collaborating with a diverse team in an environment that values diversity and equity.
- Bilingualism (French/English) or proficiency in a second language is an asset.
