Position Description

The Senior Financial Analyst, Research Grants Specialist (Internally known as a Finance Partner) will report to the Grants Management Office Manager or Controller and be part of a team responsible for approximately $200 million in annual grant revenues. The successful candidate will build working relationships with World Renowned Principal Investigators and Scientists and manage their financial grant portfolio as their main point of contact for post-award grant operations.

The key responsibilities of this role include:

  • Building and maintaining relationships with Principal Investigators and Scientists to manage their financial grant portfolio.
  • Performing expense analysis, financial reporting, reconciliations, monitoring, financial planning, budgeting, compliance, and scheduled meetings with granting agencies.
  • Managing, preparing, and analyzing financial reporting, invoicing of portfolio in Canadian and Foreign Currencies.
  • Reviewing and assessing the status of ongoing grants and the burn rate of the grants to evaluate funding requirements and potential deficiencies.
  • Communicating and reporting potential funding deficiencies to the Principal Investigators and Scientists, Research Institute, and Senior Management.
  • Collaborating with HR, Legal, Grants Management Office, Principal Investigators, Core Facilities, and Lab Animal Services to implement cost-cutting measures.
  • Preparing grant closeout functions, including reconciliations, final financial reports, final invoices, and zeroing out budgets.
  • Reviewing general ledger transactions and grant contracts for compliance with related accounting, SickKids, and agency regulations.
  • Preparing accurate and complete journal entries and supporting documentation.
  • Presenting recommendations for procedural and work-flow efficiencies in the Grants Management Office.
  • Supporting the Research Institute in education and training of Principal Investigators and administrators.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
  • In progress or completion of a Canadian recognized accounting designation (CPA).
  • 3+ years of accounting experience, preferably with grant management or non-profit experience.
  • Knowledge of Canadian GAAP, accounting, bookkeeping, laws, regulations, agency policies, and guidelines.
  • Ability to design, analyze, and prepare financial statements, invoices, and reports.
  • Ability to monitor expenditures and maintain data and prepare forecasts and projections.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interface with Principal Investigators, granting agencies, external auditors, and all levels within the Research Institute.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and demonstrated excellence in organizing and prioritizing workload in a fast-paced and high-volume environment.
  • Strong analytical skills, knowledge, and skill in applying analytical and evaluative techniques to the identification and resolution of grant administration issues.
  • Highly computer literate with advanced knowledge of MS Excel and MS Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of PeopleSoft is an asset.
  • Demonstrated commitment and actions in advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion objectives.
