Job Summary

Key Responsibilities
  • Establish Therapeutic Relationships: Develop and maintain effective relationships with patients and their families to provide emotional support and assess their needs.
  • Assess and Identify Patient Needs: Conduct thorough assessments to identify patients' actual and potential strengths and limitations, including physiological, psychological, social-cultural, and spiritual needs.
  • Develop and Implement Care Plans: Contribute to the development and modification of individualized care plans, identifying patient priorities and suggesting revisions as needed.
  • Perform Nursing Procedures: Carry out various nursing procedures, such as taking blood pressures, heights, and weights, and communicating patient information to the in-charge nurses, physicians, and other team members.
  • Monitor and Evaluate Patient Status: Monitor patients' status in relation to anticipated outcomes, evaluate the effectiveness of nursing interventions, and report any unanticipated changes or concerns to the nurse-in-charge.
  • Maintain Accurate Records: Maintain complete and accurate computerized and paper records, tracking results, consults, documentation, and inputting data and documentation in accordance with established procedures and policies.
  • Medication Administration: Review medication administration records, check with the nurse-in-charge or physician regarding any concerns, and store patient medications according to standards and agency directives.
  • Deliver Medications: Deliver medications consistent with the written care plan, physician orders, and in accordance with the standards of British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals and established procedures.
  • Assist with Examinations and Treatments: Assist RN/RPNs and physicians in performing various examinations, treatments, and diagnostic procedures, such as physical examinations.
  • Collaborate with Treatment Team: Work with the treatment team to assist patients with their program requirements, monitoring program requirements and using motivational interviewing techniques.
  • Ensure Infection Control: Ensure that infection control protocols are followed by all patients and personnel, observing behaviors and handling, storing, and disposing of workplace hazardous materials and sharps in accordance with established procedures.
  • Perform Security Functions: Perform regular security functions to maintain the safety and security of patients, staff, families, and the general public, taking immediate action to mitigate risks and reporting all real and potential risk issues.
  • Assess Individual Patient Risks: Assess individual patient risk factors and incorporate risk mitigation strategies into patients' care plans to optimize safety and security for staff, other inmates, and the general public.
Qualifications
  • Graduation from a recognized program for Practical Nurses plus 1 year of experience working with offenders and/or in secure health care settings, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Current full practicing licensure with the British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals (BCCNP).
  • Occupational First Aid Level 2 certification (OFA Level 3 certification for positions at the Ford Mountain Correctional Centre).
