Reporting directly to the Vice President of Human Resources, the Head of Employee and Labor Relations will be responsible for the strategic planning, development, and execution of employee and labor relations initiatives. This role is essential in promoting effective, fair, and respectful labor-management relations within the organization, while also fostering a positive and productive work environment.

The incumbent will offer specialized guidance, support, and coaching to management and stakeholders, assisting in the resolution of workplace challenges and enhancing decision-making capabilities. This position will lead union relations and serve as the primary liaison with union representatives. Additionally, the incumbent will design and implement educational programs and training sessions focused on employee and labor relations to ensure a fair and equitable approach to labor issues, emphasizing problem-solving methodologies.

The Director will provide advanced expertise in labor relations, including collective agreement interpretations, preparation for negotiations, and compliance with human rights legislation. The role includes senior-level guidance on managing grievances and arbitrations, as well as coordinating local bargaining processes. The incumbent will also support dispute resolution efforts to address complaints and grievances effectively, mediating agreements as necessary. Furthermore, the Director will oversee investigations into workplace misconduct and harassment claims, ensuring a thorough and impartial process.

Qualifications

A minimum of a 4-year degree in Human Resources, Industrial Relations, Social Sciences, Psychology, Business, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At least nine (9) years of progressive leadership experience in Employee and Labor Relations. An HR Professional designation (CHRE, CHRL, or CHRP) is required. Certification in Strategic Leadership or training in Alternative Dispute Resolution is an asset. Extensive experience with collective agreements, grievance management, and negotiating local agreements, preferably within the post-secondary education sector or broader public sector. Comprehensive knowledge of relevant legislation and collective agreements affecting employee and labor relations. Proven experience in developing and delivering strategic Human Resources functions. A collaborative leader with the ability to coach, mentor, and support employee development. Proficient in dispute resolution and conflict management. Highly organized project manager capable of managing multiple time-sensitive projects. Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills. Broad understanding of all aspects of Human Resources Management. Demonstrated skills in financial administration, strategic planning, and project management. Strong sense of tact, diplomacy, and commitment to confidentiality.
