Position Overview: The Mental Health Community Support Specialist plays a crucial role in delivering housing and support services that empower clients to achieve and sustain independent living. This position is designed for those who can work on a casual basis across various shifts.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Implement engaging programs that include leisure activities, cooking, and housekeeping to enhance clients' daily living skills.
  • Provide community-based psychosocial rehabilitation services, assisting clients in accessing community programs and resources.
  • Teach and model essential life skills and strategies for self-care and independent living.
  • Utilize effective communication strategies to build collaborative relationships with clients.
  • Support clients in developing self-esteem and decision-making skills through various techniques.
  • Assist clients in identifying and connecting with community supports, including leisure, vocational, and educational services.
  • Monitor and document clients' physical and mental health status, taking appropriate actions as needed.
  • Advocate for clients to uphold their rights and dignity.
  • Collaborate professionally with clients, colleagues, supervisors, and external agencies.
  • Develop tailored life skills programs involving family and community resources when appropriate.
  • Complete all administrative tasks and requirements in a timely manner.
  • Conduct assessments to create individualized plans based on clients' interests and needs.
  • Safely distribute medications in accordance with established policies.
  • Ensure the effective implementation of maintenance, housekeeping, and cooking tasks.
  • Address health and safety concerns as they arise.
  • Maintain accurate records and fulfill additional duties as assigned.
  • Guide students and volunteers as needed.
Qualifications:
  • Diploma in Community Social Service or a relevant combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of two years of recent, related experience.
  • Ability to provide required certifications upon hire, including First Aid + CPR, WHMIS, and FoodSafe.
  • Clearance from the Ministry of Justice and TB, along with immunization records.
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Understanding of local housing issues and community resources.
  • Familiarity with harm reduction approaches in community settings.
  • Experience in crisis de-escalation within a team environment.
  • Ability to work with marginalized individuals and those at risk of homelessness.
  • Knowledge of psychosocial rehabilitation practices and trauma-informed care.
  • Proficiency in relevant software and effective communication skills.
  • Physical capability to perform job duties and observe changes in clients.
