Position Overview

Dalhousie University's Faculty of Science is dedicated to fostering a research-driven environment that emphasizes inclusive excellence, strategic collaborations, and active engagement with stakeholders. Under the supervision of the Assistant Dean (Student Affairs) and in collaboration with the leadership team within the Dean's Office, the Global Student Support Specialist will play a pivotal role in advancing the Faculty's internationalization agenda through personalized student guidance and co-curricular assistance, while also identifying and executing initiatives aimed at enhancing recruitment and retention.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Deliver customized academic guidance to international undergraduate students in science disciplines, assisting them in recognizing available academic pathways, including majors, minors, certificates, and relevant elective courses, both within and beyond the Faculty.
  • Conduct proactive advising outreach to support at-risk international students, helping them access university and community resources to navigate transition challenges. Facilitate the development of problem-solving and decision-making abilities, while emphasizing students' accountability for their academic journey.
  • Provide advice to students enrolled in specialized academic programs, such as ESL training, and assist international students transferring into the Faculty. Aid transfer students in integrating into the discipline placement process and evaluate prior coursework to formulate tailored course plans.
  • Support students in identifying long-term aspirations and career trajectories, including career counseling, graduate school options, and professional school pathways. Collaborate with the Coordinator of Student Experience to implement co-curricular initiatives aligned with career objectives.
  • Enhance students' understanding of available educational resources, such as work-integrated learning and experiential opportunities, including co-op placements, volunteering, or part-time employment, and make suitable referrals.
  • Advise and assist students interested in pursuing exchange programs, offering co-curricular activities to showcase opportunities available to current students. Coordinate with relevant units and students to ensure course transferability, adjusting course plans as necessary.

Additional Information

The successful candidate will have the option for hybrid work arrangements, combining in-person responsibilities on campus with remote work, as mutually agreed upon based on operational needs and university policies.

Required Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in a relevant field, coupled with approximately three to five years of pertinent experience in a post-secondary educational institution (or an equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Experience in supporting international students.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills (written, verbal, and presentation), with the ability to engage a diverse audience and demonstrate intercultural competence.
  • Strong initiative, sound judgment, and effective time management, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated empathy for students and a commitment to fostering their educational growth.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in an additional language.
