Position Summary:

The Health Record Technician Team is tasked with the analysis and assignment of Classification Codes for Acute Inpatient (DAD). This role is essential in assisting the Release of Information Office with requests concerning Access and Disclosure of Personal Health Information, ensuring adherence to legislative turnaround times. Additional responsibilities encompass data quality assessment, case weight monitoring, and the verification of unspecified clinical information with physician groups to ensure accurate data collection and submission to CIHI and other reporting entities.

The successful candidate will engage with both internal and external stakeholders in a professional and patient-focused manner, contributing innovative ideas to enhance services and data quality processes. As a member of the Health Information Management team, the individual will prioritize self-development and continuous learning while maintaining strict confidentiality of all patient information in accordance with the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA).

This is an on-site Part-Time Contract position with a day shift schedule, Monday to Friday. The physical demands of the role may include prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, and pulling. This position plays a crucial role in ensuring a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors.

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited Health Information Management program is required
  • Certification with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA) in good standing is mandatory
  • A minimum of 2 years of current experience in coding, abstracting, and release of information is required
  • Proficiency in electronic abstracting and computer applications (Word and Excel); experience with Meditech, 3M, and Code finder is an asset
  • Strong analytical skills for case analysis and interpretation for ICD coding classification are essential
  • Understanding of grouping and weighting methodologies (e.g., CMG, RIW, HIG, Complexity, CACS, and ACW) is necessary
  • Ability to apply quality practices and standards to coding and abstracting
  • Capability to work independently, prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and perform effectively under pressure
  • Familiarity with relevant legislative requirements for the release of personal information, including the Personal Health Information Protection Act, Mental Health Act, Public Hospital Act, Freedom of Information Act, and Coroners Act
  • Excellent customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills are required
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Demonstrated regular attendance at work is required
