Job Title: Volunteers in Connected Families Parenting Support

VHA Home HealthCare is a leading provider of home care services in Ontario, and we are seeking dedicated volunteers to join our team in the Connected Families, Parenting Support Program. As a volunteer, you will play a vital role in supporting at-risk families with children from birth to four years of age, providing temporary relief and support services to help them thrive.

About the Program

The Connected Families, Parenting Support Program is committed to ensuring the health and wellness of mothers and families experiencing stress, isolation, and mental health concerns. Our program provides a safe and supportive environment for families to receive the help they need, and our volunteers are essential to making this happen.

Responsibilities
  • Visit families weekly on the same day and time for three hours per week
  • Engage in meaningful conversations with mothers and engage with infants and toddlers (age 0-4 years)
  • Introduce new learning activities to children and partner with parents to plan and prepare healthy and nutritious meals
  • Provide information about community resources and accompany mothers and children to local community resources
  • Complete and submit weekly logs for feedback and attend meetings and training sessions
Commitment

We are seeking volunteers who can commit to 3 hours per week, plus travel time, for a minimum of 3-6 months. Each assignment is 12 weeks in duration, and opportunities may be available to help more than one family during this timeframe.

Working Conditions

Volunteers will conduct in-home family visits across the city of Toronto, with a focus on priority neighbourhoods. Visits will take place in small spaces, and volunteers must be comfortable moving around in small spaces and interacting with children.

Requirements
  • Person-centered and caring attitude
  • Related child development experience and experience caring for newborns and toddlers
  • Experience working with culturally diverse families and knowledge of community resources
  • Strong active listening skills and oral communication skills
  • Knowledge of mental health and previous volunteer experience an asset
