Our dedication to enhancing every customer's experience has transformed our market into a vibrant community center. We proudly offer Vancouver Island's most extensive selection of organic, local, and conventional produce, along with a full-service butcher and deli, a boutique florist and garden center, artisanal grocery items, and a newly introduced coffee bar, all within over 10,000 square feet and a team of more than 120 employees.

Position Overview

The Retail Operations Manager is responsible for guiding our Store Management Teams across both locations to ensure an exceptional experience for customers and team members alike. This role is pivotal in driving internal initiatives that promote revenue growth and profitability. Aligned with The Root Cellar's core values, the Operations Manager ensures financial success by enforcing consistent standards, operational procedures, strategic objectives, and a positive workplace culture.

This position requires exemplary leadership, accountability, sound judgment, and a commitment to the continuous development of The Root Cellar's performance. The Retail Operations Manager is expected to engage directly in operations as needed, embodying the philosophy that no task is too small.

Key Responsibilities
Operational Management
  • Oversee the financial performance of both locations, including budget management, profit and loss oversight, and financial reporting.
  • Achieve budgetary goals related to revenue, margins, labor, and net profit.
  • Analyze financial statements to assess performance against budgets and forecasts, identifying areas for improvement.
  • Assist in the formulation of annual budgets by setting targets for revenue growth, productivity, and expense management.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in Finance, Procurement, Human Resources, and Marketing to execute operational plans.
  • Ensure adherence to company policies and standards at the store level.
  • Participate in strategic planning and fiscal management.
  • Develop and implement new operational standards and procedures to maintain high-quality service delivery.
  • Safeguard company assets by monitoring costs and expenditures.
  • Report on key performance indicators and operational standards to senior management.
Leadership and Culture
  • Promote a culture of accountability and service excellence.
  • Enhance team member experiences through culture-building initiatives and effective performance management.
  • Foster a recognition culture that supports the development of high-potential team members.
  • Exhibit superior communication skills in all interactions.
  • Coach and mentor store leadership teams to achieve optimal performance.
  • Align scheduling with budgetary constraints while ensuring high standards of service.
  • Maintain a safe and healthy work environment in compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Represent the organization positively to external stakeholders.
  • Conduct regular meetings with various teams to ensure alignment and communication.
Sustainability Commitment

Candidate Profile
  • Minimum five years in a senior leadership role within a related field.
  • Five years of management experience in the grocery sector.
  • Bachelor's degree in business administration or a related discipline.
  • Strong knowledge of operational functions including finance, customer service, and employee management.
  • Proven ability to optimize operational processes for efficiency.
  • Familiarity with industry regulations and compliance.
  • Experience in dynamic, fast-paced environments.
  • Proficient in budget development and operational planning.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office and business management software.
