POSITION SUMMARY:
The Senior Mechanical Engineer plays a crucial role in the design and maintenance of new products for Thornhill's MADM and RespirAct product lines. This position collaborates within a cross-functional product development team to create and prototype mechanical systems, as well as to analyze and test designs, guiding them from initial concept through to market launch.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Design & Development:
- Design components and assemblies for both new and existing products utilizing plastic and metal materials.
- Generate 3D part files, manufacturing drawings, and assembly documentation using SolidWorks software.
- Enhance existing designs to improve manufacturability, reliability, or cost-effectiveness as necessary.
- Conduct tolerance stack-up, basic thermal, and stress analyses.
- Construct and evaluate prototypes to ensure compliance with all critical design specifications.
- Develop engineering testing protocols and assist in their implementation.
- Engage with suppliers and subcontractors to define manufacturing processes.
- Participate in failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) for designs and processes as part of a comprehensive risk management strategy.
- Collaborate closely with manufacturing specialists on the creation and upkeep of work instructions.
Sustaining Support:
- Update existing designs to adhere to current standards and address issues related to component obsolescence.
- Assist production and service teams in resolving technical challenges and establishing effective testing protocols.
General Engineering:
- Prepare engineering change requests and manage change orders.
- Engage in the design review process.
- Coordinate with partners, suppliers, and subcontractors to resolve technical issues and fulfill requirements.
- Provide technical guidance to junior engineers.
Other:
- Prioritize quality in all aspects of work and adhere to established procedures and standards.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline (Master's degree preferred).
- Professional Engineer designation is an asset.
- Over 10 years of progressive experience in mechanical design within a regulated industry, preferably in medical devices.
- Experience in mechanical design within a multidisciplinary team and mass production with contract manufacturers.
SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE:
- Proven knowledge of component manufacturing processes, including machining, sheet metal fabrication, plastic and metal 3D printing, plating, injection molding, and die casting.
- Familiarity with standard mechanical practices such as tolerance analysis, GD&T, DFA, and DFM.
- A demonstrated ability to solve problems through effective, practical, and innovative designs.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling software, preferably SolidWorks.
- Understanding of actuators including stepper motors, linear stages, and solenoids.
- Strong grasp of quality and regulatory standards relevant to mechanical design in the medical device sector.
- Knowledge of standards such as IEC 60601, ISO 13485, and ISO 14971.
- Familiarity with adhesives and packaging techniques.
- Previous experience with SolidWorks PDM/Manage is advantageous.
- Understanding of biocompatibility and toxicology testing is beneficial.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to produce concise and accurate technical documentation.
- Strong organizational and time management capabilities.
- Self-motivated individual who is creative and able to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
- Ability to build strong relationships and work effectively with cross-functional teams to achieve common goals.
- Commitment to achieving results consistently, even in challenging situations.
- Accountability for meeting commitments.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Primarily office-based environment with occasional exposure to production areas as needed.
- Light lifting and bending may be required.
- Some travel may be necessary.
