Residential Counsellor Position

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Residential Counsellor to join our team at Broadview Village. As a Residential Counsellor, you will play a vital role in providing support and care to individuals with developmental disabilities and mental health challenges.
Key Responsibilities:- Support and Care: Provide individualized support and care to residents, promoting their personal development and well-being.
- Advocacy and Self-Advocacy: Advocate on behalf of residents and facilitate self-advocacy to community supports, working collaboratively with colleagues and healthcare professionals.
- Documentation and Record-Keeping: Maintain accurate and up-to-date records, ensuring compliance with established legislation and policies.
- Medication Administration: Administer medications as required, following established protocols and procedures.
- Learning Opportunities: Provide opportunities for residents to learn and grow, utilizing agency and community resources.
- Independence and Supervision: Foster independence in residents, supervising and assisting with meal preparation and clean-up.
- Cleanliness and Health and Safety: Maintain a clean and safe environment, ensuring health and safety protocols are closely followed.
- Orientation and Support: Provide orientation and support to co-workers, students, volunteers, and family members.
- Agency and Program Goals: Promote and follow the agency and program goals and philosophy.
- Exposure to Dirt and Bodily Fluids: Work in an environment where exposure to dirt and bodily fluids is possible.
- Noise and Verbal Abuse: Work in a noisy environment and may be exposed to verbal abuse.
- Physical Demands: Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs. and apply effective body mechanics and meet the physical demands of the position.
- Education: Completed Developmental Services Worker Diploma or other degree/diploma related to human services is preferred.
- Certifications: Valid and current Standard First Aid Certificate and CPR Level C Certificate are required.
- Nonviolent Crisis Intervention: Ability to achieve Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certificate upon hire and use it in practice on a regular basis.
- Experience: Minimum 6-12 months' experience working with people with developmental disabilities and preferably working with individuals who have a dual diagnosis of mental health challenges and developmental disabilities.
- Medication Administration: Experience with medication administration is preferred.
- Counselling and De-Escalation: Strong counselling and de-escalation support skills are required.
- Background Checks: Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion.
- Understanding of The Salvation Army's Mission: Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
