Job Summary

The Salvation Army is seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Part Time Residential Counsellor to join our team. As a Residential Counsellor, you will play a vital role in providing support and care to individuals with developmental disabilities and mental health challenges.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide individualized support and advocacy for residents, promoting their personal development and independence.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and healthcare professionals to develop and implement Individual Support Plans (ISPs).
  • Administer medications and maintain accurate records.
  • Ensure a safe and healthy environment by maintaining cleanliness and adhering to health and safety protocols.
  • Provide orientation and support to new staff members, students, and volunteers.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development to enhance skills and knowledge.
Working Conditions

This role requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, handling multiple tasks and priorities while maintaining a high level of professionalism and compassion. You will be exposed to various physical and emotional demands, including:

  • Exposure to dirt, bodily fluids, and waste.
  • Dealing with angry and abusive individuals.
  • Handling garbage and odorous environments.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
Qualifications and Education
  • Completed Developmental Services Worker Diploma or equivalent degree/diploma in human services.
  • Valid and current Standard First Aid Certificate and CPR Level C Certificate.
  • Ability to achieve Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certificate.
Experience and Knowledge
  • Minimum 6-12 months' experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities and mental health challenges.
  • Experience with implementing ISPs and medication administration.
Skills and Capabilities
  • Strong counselling and de-escalation skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Capacity to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
