Main Purpose of the Role:
The UK stands as a global frontrunner in science and technology. Canada is among the UK's closest allies and collaborators, as both nations strive to push technological boundaries to combat climate change, stimulate economic growth, and provide global public goods.
The British Consulate General in Vancouver seeks a proactive individual to become part of the UK's global Science & Innovation Network (SIN) as the Director of Science and Innovation in British Columbia. This position serves as a vital link between the UK and Canada's science and technology sectors. You will play a crucial role in ensuring that the UK remains the preferred partner for Canada in science and innovation, fostering research collaborations in key areas essential for the UK's future, including the responsible advancement of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and bioengineering, alongside scientific endeavors aimed at climate action.
You will identify connections and opportunities; contribute to the UK Government's policy-making framework; design, lead, and execute projects and events; build and nurture networks in both nations; organize and oversee high-profile visits from UK dignitaries; and represent the Consulate General and the UK Government, all aimed at strengthening UK-Canada relations among governments, regulators, research institutions, funding bodies, accelerators, Indigenous partners, and private-sector innovators.
Key Responsibilities:
- Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and ambitious work culture.
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of the science and innovation landscape, strengths, and policies across British Columbia.
- Actively seek and stimulate opportunities for high-impact collaboration that benefits the UK.
- Influence local stakeholders to promote UK interests across a diverse range of science and innovation sectors in British Columbia.
- Provide leadership across Canada on priority science and technology initiatives, developing actionable plans with colleagues nationwide.
- Compile and contribute to reports and briefings for UK stakeholders.
- Oversee projects, visits, and events (both virtual and in-person) related to science and innovation.
- Contribute to broader initiatives and programs of the British Consulate-General and SIN Canada in support of UK interests.
