The Department of Surgery within the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher in Health Services Research.

Role Summary:

The Ohlson Research Initiative (ORI) is dedicated to advancing clinical effectiveness research aimed at enhancing the care of patients diagnosed with head and neck cancer. The ORI collaborates closely with the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute, the O'Brien Institute of Public Health, and the Cumming School of Medicine (Departments of Surgery & Oncology). As a member of the ORI, under the guidance of Drs. Sauro & Dort, the postdoctoral researcher will engage in research that seeks to improve patient care and outcomes. This role encourages the development of an independent research program, with support for applying for external funding opportunities.

The primary objective of this position is to conduct impactful research in the field of head and neck cancer. The postdoctoral researcher will enhance the ORI's research portfolio, particularly focusing on health services research. Responsibilities will include leading research initiatives, assisting in grant writing, completing ethical review applications, conceptualizing and designing research projects, executing studies, and disseminating findings through publications and presentations. Given the collaborative nature of the ORI, the postdoctoral researcher will interact with various stakeholders throughout the research process.

Qualifications:

  • PhD, MD, or equivalent degree obtained within 3 years prior to the start of the appointment.
  • Demonstrated interest in health services research related to head and neck cancer, particularly in surgical care.
  • Methodological Expertise:
    • Proficiency in diverse health services research methodologies.
    • Experience with knowledge synthesis methodologies is advantageous.
    • Familiarity with secondary data sources, including electronic medical records and national health surveys, is a plus.
    • Competence in statistical software (preferably Stata, SAS, or R) and database management.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to work autonomously and manage multiple tasks.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Effective time management, initiative, and teamwork capabilities.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a professional demeanor.
  • Able to thrive in a dynamic team environment.
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint) and internet applications.
