The Alberta Cancer Registry (ACR) serves as a comprehensive population-based registry that meticulously documents and maintains records of all newly diagnosed cancer cases and cancer-related fatalities within the province. This initiative is governed by the regulations set forth by the Regional Health Authorities Cancer Registry. The integrity and precision of cancer data are paramount for effective cancer surveillance, research initiatives, and the strategic planning and evaluation of cancer care programs aimed at enhancing patient outcomes. The registry acts as a vital resource for numerous data inquiries from epidemiologists, statisticians, researchers, and healthcare professionals.
The Cancer Registrar II is expected to exhibit advanced knowledge of oncology systems, coupled with strong decision-making capabilities to ensure compliance with both national and international coding standards. Attributes such as self-motivation, critical thinking, adaptability to evolving circumstances, and proactive engagement will be essential in spearheading improvement initiatives. This role encompasses staying informed about the latest coding and staging protocols, facilitating training sessions, ensuring that the ACR application meets contemporary demands, devising quality control strategies, participating in national committees, and providing support for epidemiological research as necessary.
Key Responsibilities:
As a Cancer Registrar II, your primary responsibilities will include:
- Conducting thorough reviews of legal hybrid health records for Oncology coding and staging in accordance with National and International Cancer Registry guidelines.
- Leading the coordination and training efforts for quality assurance and staging activities among staff members.
- Monitoring and maintaining quality assurance through active participation in the quality control program established by the Quality Assurance Committee.
- Implementing staging systems and overseeing the accuracy of staging information.
Required Qualifications:
A diploma from an accredited Health Information Management Professional (HIMP) program is required. Candidates must be actively registered or eligible for registration with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA).
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
Certification as an Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) from the National Cancer Registrars Association is preferred. Strong leadership skills, including demonstrated experience in coaching and change management within a professional environment, are essential. Proven experience in meeting or surpassing quality and productivity benchmarks in a performance-tracking environment is also required. Familiarity with AHS clinical applications (e.g., Connect Care, ARIA, AXON, NETCARE) is advantageous.
