The Compensation Range is the span between the minimum and maximum base salary for a position. The midpoint of the range is approximately halfway between the minimum and the maximum and represents an employee that possesses full job knowledge, qualifications and experience for the position. In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

Job Summary

The Compensation unit has responsibilities in job evaluation, salary costing and administration, bargaining costing and data reporting, market surveys, and reward and recognition initiatives. The unit is also responsible for interpreting and administrating language governing job evaluation and salary administration in collective agreements and handbooks.

The Compensation Consultant works in partnership with client faculties/departments to provide a full range of consultation on all matters relating to compensation such as job evaluation and salary administration. The position designs, implements and administers effective compensation systems; interprets and administers job evaluation and salary administration matters from collective agreements and employee handbooks; interprets University policies, procedures, and practices, and develops and implements University guidelines for salary administration.

In addition, the Compensation Consultant provides costing services include costing to support collective bargaining, and regulatory data reporting, and ad hoc costing and reporting for HR and University planning needs.

Organizational Status

Reports to the Senior Manager, Compensation. Collaborates with HR Advisory Services and other units in HR on matters such as organizational restructuring and employee relations. Works with and union/association representatives on compensation matters. This position also collaborates with Employee Relations and Faculty Relations to understand collective bargaining mandates and to provide costing support for collective bargaining.

Work Performed

Costing and Data Modelling- Provides a full range of compensation costing services for collective bargaining support, including providing consulting advice, measuring labour cost baseline and the cost of prospective negotiated wage increases, and analyzing the cost impacts of a wide range of novel and complex non-salary proposals.- Communicates the employer's methodology on bargaining proposals, and represents the University in a respectful manner during rigorous internal and external discussions regarding costing methodology.- Models and costs alternative approaches to the University’s compensation reviews and workforce changes.- Prepares reports from complex data for internal and external processes. The reports are used by the Associate Vice Presidents, Human Resources; Vice President, Human Resources; the University Executive; Board of Governors; and the provincial government.- Anticipates reporting needs and works with the Integrated Services Centre to develop new reports or refine existing reports.

Job Evaluation and Compensation- Classifies job descriptions and conducts position reviews in accordance with UBC’s classification systems. Advises departments on job design including providing consultative guidance for reorganizations of client work units.- Conducts research for classifications not covered by a collective agreement and facilitates salary changes by reviewing rates annually, conducting necessary research, preparing recommendations on findings and maintaining rates for all groups.- Develops and facilitates training for administrators and HR professionals on job evaluation and salary management topics.- Determines gaps and initiates improvements to existing procedures and guidelines. Monitors processes to ensure that they are delivered efficiently and with regard to the needs of the client departments.- Develops and conducts compensation surveys and participates in surveys conducted by other organizations.- Liaises with Employee Relations regarding issues having an impact either on the University's practices or the administration of collective agreements and employee handbooks.- Oversees the implementation of
