The role of the Academic Advisor is to advise undecided and at-risk students at the University of Regina. This includes assisting new and continuing students in setting their personal, academic, and life goals. It also includes advising students on programs of study, course planning, policies and procedures, personal assistance, and referrals to the appropriate resources. Other duties include keeping thorough files, facilitating group advising sessions, workshops, and supportive programming, monitoring peer advisors and/or Student Assistants, identifying and supporting at-risk students, and helping students to achieve success setting career goals, selecting concentrations, and creating degree plans.
The position reports to the Academic Advising Coordinator in the Student Success Centre. The incumbent maintains collaborative relationships across campus to provide a comprehensive, integrated approach to student success and retention.
**What You’ll Do**:
- Facilitating individual (drop-in and booked) and group advising meetings with students in all faculties and programs (including qualifying and transition programs), in-person and remotely (via Zoom). This involves working with students to create educational plans; providing holistic service by advising students on such areas as: course selection, transition to university/career/after-degree programs, awards and financial information, living arrangements, healthy living, etc.
- Implementing proactive advising strategies; and scheduling and facilitating workshops.
- Assisting the Coordinator and other departmental staff in developing programming. This includes developing online tutorials and other resources related to academic advising; analyzing specific groups of at-risk students; and assisting with the development and management of a peer academic advising program, and leading training initiatives for Student Assistants.
- Extensive work with UR International to support unique needs of international students.
- Active conversion, registration and retention initiatives.
- Promoting the advising unit and participating in student outreach.
- Establishing and maintaining effective collaborative relationships with University staff members.
- Participating as a member of the Orientation Day Committee if needed.
- Responsibilities may include program planning, overseeing logistics, and execution.

Position Requirements
**What You’ll Bring to this Position**:
- A degree and a minimum of one year experience working directly with diverse student populations.
- A combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
**Skills That Will Ensure Your Success in the Role**:
- Extensive knowledge of the University of Regina’s Undergraduate Calendar, including policies, procedures, all academic programs and available support.
- A working knowledge of student development theories and strategies relating to retention of undecided and at-risk students.
- Understanding of transition programs offered by the Student Success Centre.
- Experience advising students in transition programs an asset.
- Knowledge of Admissions and Registration processes.
- Capacity to meet with numerous students daily (average of 10+ student appointments per day, with up to 40+ student appointments per day during peak times).
