- The Naturalization Coordinator reports to the Manager, Asset Control & Service Delivery. The Naturalization Coordinator will ensure expansion of the Naturalization program throughout the municipality by creating relationships with a variety of stakeholders including, community associations and institutions (schools and universities), and other orders of government. The Naturalization Coordinator will also seek various funding opportunities to expand the Naturalization Program.
- The Naturalization Coordinator fulfills the Municipality’s commitments in the Park Naturalization Strategy to implement an ecologically based approach to landscape management. The strategy seeks to enhance biodiversity and ecological resilience in the urban landscape using native or non-invasive-adapted plant species.
- The Naturalization Coordinator provides intermediate-level project management, program development and interjurisdictional coordination and works jointly with other business units and external stakeholders to realize environmental objectives.**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Selecting and prioritizing sites considering factors such as proximity to existing natural areas, protection of existing native species, adjacent uses, invasive species control, Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles, physical extent of potential area, equity, visibility, and community support;
- Organizing on-going community stewardship for each project which requires sustained effort to find interested community members and keep them updated and engaged;
- Planning and design of naturalization sites which involves landscape analysis, developing site plans and species selection;
- Organizing site preparation which may require contractors and procuring appropriate plant species.
- Coordinating on-the-ground logistics for planting, maintaining, and monitoring sites;
- Considering the intake of community tree planting requests in coordination with the urban forestry program;
- Liaising with partners who can offer plant stock/seeds and whose research can complement municipal naturalization efforts;
- Expanding communication and education regarding the benefits of naturalization, resources for private landowners and the celebration of projects through an enhanced web presence and regular social media posts;
- Creating on-site interpretation materials which explain the rationale and benefits of naturalization and provides details regarding site-specific species; and
- Developing naturalization program metrics such as total land area converted, number of plant species, number of pollinator and other animal species and level of community support and participation.
- Other related duties as assigned.

**QUALIFICATIONS**

**Education and Experience**:

- University degree in environmental and landscape architecture, horticulture, community planning/design, geography, business administration, or related field from an accredited college or university;
- Experience working in and/or with community-based organizations;
- A minimum of three years’ professional experience in the field of planning, voluntary sector organization management/administration, grant program administration, horticultural practices or community development; and
- Valid N.S. driver’s license and own and access to a reliable, personal vehicle.

**Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities**:

- Experience in a role focused on organizing, supervising, managing and measuring initiatives;
- Demonstrates commitment to continuous learning and improvement, actively promoting training initiatives for self and others;
- Must have the ability to manage volatile situations where the public or stakeholders may disagree with each other or with HRM. This ability is complemented by the use of appropriate mediation and diplomatic skills in such situations;
- Knowledge in horticulture and natural landscape design;
- Possess superior written and verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal and facilitation skills;
- Public and stakeholder engagement and volunteer recruitment;
- Best practices related to policies and design standards in the areas of naturalization;
- Financial administration; and
- Municipal government and park & open space delivery.
