Innovation and Leadership Specialist, Hotchkiss

**Position Overview**
Reporting to the Senior Manager of Innovation, Partnerships, and Strategy at the Hotchkiss Brain Institute (HBI) in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary, and working closely with the Director of Innovation and Commercialization and the Senior Advisor, Programs at HBI, the Innovation and Leadership Specialist will be responsible for supporting HBI's members and trainees, including building and managing the T. Boone Pickens Emerging Leaders and Innovation Program, supporting the translation of research innovations into impact, and nurturing the neuroscience innovation ecosystem.
This position involves significant planning, networking, community building, and strong communication and organizational skills. The role will include interactions with various stakeholders, including the business community, industry, non-profit organizations, students, faculty, and staff from three universities. The role also includes the development of training and other opportunities that contribute to the entrepreneurship ecosystem in Alberta and project planning innovation activities.
**Position Description**
**Summary of Key Responsibilities** (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Create the innovation portfolio strategy, and identify, build, and maintain an extensive network of resources and partnerships that will support and enhance the acceleration of neuroscience research to commercialization at HBI
- Develop and implement the goals, objectives, and targets of the new T. Boone Pickens Emerging Leadership and Innovation Program and the REALISE Innovation and Entrepreneurship portfolio, and ensure they are achieved
- Develop, implement, and grow the Leadership and Innovation Training program, which entails designing and delivering content to build leadership, innovation, ideation, translational research, and commercialization skills. This could include some aspects of supervision of staff for event planning (in-person and hybrid), consulting with experts, securing speakers, scheduling, budgeting, workshop execution and evaluation, promotion/marketing, reporting, and all other logistics required to run a training program
- In charge of the creation and oversight of the innovation program budget
- Create innovation and translational research-related materials, including course material, feedback systems, evaluations, and other materials in support of HBI's initiatives
- Provide direct innovation and commercialization support and guidance to HBI members and trainees, including offering guidance and mentorship on the innovation, entrepreneurial, and commercialization process, as well as sharing resources for support on and off campus
- Provide updates for social media, newsletters, website, and other forms of communication in conjunction with HBI staff and leadership, as well as liaise with the team on new stories and other communication
- Innovation and Entrepreneurship Support:
- Maintain and disseminate a network of resources available to innovators and entrepreneurs, including educational opportunities, service providers, and programs
- Provide innovators and entrepreneurs with direction in navigating and connecting with ecosystem partners
- Support the validation of innovations, including supporting HBI members in evaluating, companies, technologies, and teams regarding the likelihood of business success and market opportunity as well as supporting the development of business plans
- Work with innovators to define key performance indicators, success metrics, and milestones and to source potential funding options
- Identify and Support the development of partnerships with key innovation hubs globally
- Other responsibilities include:
- Participate in the development of proposals and presentations to support the development of initiatives and funds
- Evaluate and track progress reporting numbers for HBI initiatives, events, and projects
**Qualifications / Requirements**:
- Undergraduate degree in Business or related field. Masters degree an asset
- Must hold a degree in commerce or a related field
- Expert in the innovation/commercialization field, with at least 5 years of experience as an entrepreneur, manager, or leader
- Experience long term planning and project management, and known for undertaking innovative work, and as collaborator
- Ability to coach, mentor and connect innovators and entrepreneurs on aspects such as fundraising, business planning, marketing, and budget management
- Must be passionate about enabling neuroscience innovation in Alberta
- Strong oral and written communication skills are essential, including the ability to listen, learn, and clearly convey business concepts, including innovation and entrepreneurship
- Experience working in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities and the ability to prioritize effectively
- Strong networking ability and community-building skills
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
