Position Summary

The Clinical Extern position will provide Nursing students with relevant experience in patient care while working in a collaborative team environment. Clinical Externs are unregulated healthcare providers and will work as part of an interprofessional team under the supervision of regulated healthcare providers. The Clinical Extern collaborates with the team to provide excellent patient-centred care.

Primary Responsibilities

Assist patients with activities of daily living such as personal care, toileting, feeding, and recreational activities as noted in the care plan.
Checking vital signs
Patient transport if nurse presence is not required
Pain assessment and non-pharmacological pain reduction support, such as distraction
Provide comfort and support to patients
Falls Risk Assessment
CAM Assessment
Hourly Rounding (Pain, Positioning, Personal care, Patient Safety)
Assist with patient support and positioning when registered staff perform procedures such as wound care
Answer call bells, address patient concerns where appropriate and advise nursing staff when nursing assistance is required.
Engage in additional skills via delegation as approved by unit leadership (and as applicable).

**Qualifications**:
Current students enrolled in a Level 2, 3 or 4 of the BScN program, or Semester 3 or 4 of a PN program recognized by the College of Nurses of Ontario
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrated time management and organizational skills.
Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of patient populations within a hospital setting
Demonstrated ability to follow BCHS policies and procedures to guide their clinical practice.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to lift using appropriate techniques and bend, push and pull using good body mechanics.
