Job Summary
The Manager, Programming (UBC Aquatic Centre) is responsible for developing and managing the UBC Aquatic Centre learn to swim programs, aquatic fitness programs, aquatic day camps programs, private coaching programs, aquatic birthday parties program, Aquatic therapy exercise related initiatives and advanced/certification courses. This position works with both the UBC Aquatic Centre and the Recreation units within the Department of Athletics and Recreation.
The position is responsible for managing a combination of full-time staff and part-time hourly CUPE 116 Shift Supervisors, Lifeguard/Instructors, and Sport Instructors. Duties include: managing the end to end operations of the aquatic program which is comprised of various program areas, developing and implementing program schedules and budgets; hire, train, evaluate and manage full-time/part-time program staff; hiring of qualified and specially trained instructors for aquatic programs, lesson program curriculum development and evaluation; and the development and implementation of aquatic program specific marketing strategies. This individual must be able to generate new ideas and be results oriented.
This position will require a flexible schedule, and will require some evening and weekend work.
Organizational Status
Athletics & Recreation (A&R) is a department within the VP Students portfolio, with a strong focus on creating an exceptional UBC student experience. The A&R Department has a team of approximately 125 employees, and is led by a strong cross-unit management team. It services over 20,000 students through recreational programming, 26 varsity teams, and 13 competitive clubs along with thousands of members of the UBC community.
The Manager, Programming (UBC Aquatic Centre) dual reports to the UBC Aquatic Centre Senior Manager and Director, Recreation and Intramurals. Works autonomously however, in close coordination with all UBC Aquatic Centre staff and with other department facility managers/coordinators, coaches, community users, and facility/program registrants and clients.
Work Performed
Program Development, Planning and Delivery- Develop and manage the UBC Aquatic Centre swim lesson programs: plan and implement a diverse and innovative offering of aquatic lessons and learn to swim courses; Provides direction to Head Guards as well as assists Lifeguard/Instructors with lesson planning and templates; assess quality of lessons and instructors; oversee end-of season progress reports.- Develops, plans and implements a diverse and innovative offering of instructional, competitive and recreational aquatic programs for all ages including (but not limited to) advanced courses, certification courses, day camps, fitness classes and schedules, aquatic therapy exercise courses and private swim coaching- Design and implement policies and procedures to govern the delivery of programs and to facilitate efficient and effective registration, sign-in, staff reporting and risk management procedures.- Develop curriculum and learning objectives for all programming and courses.- Analyzes the effectiveness and profitability of current programming. Develop and implement assessment tools to ensure participant satisfaction and to assess the needs of the UBC community with regards to program offerings.- Provides leadership and direction to the to Program Associate and Head Guard in management of private lessons, including booking and scheduling staff.- Responsible for program/lesson/course queries.
