Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Assistant Dean (Student Flourishing and Inclusion), is responsible for the management of a team of five permanent administrative staff pertaining to activities of the Faculty of Law Student Affairs Office.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Implements and oversees academic advising in the Faculty; oversees development, planning, implementation, and improvement of student affairs and advising policies and programs; defines the requirements for information systems that support the Faculty’s initiatives and implements new initiatives that support the Faculty strategic directions.

Manages academic student affairs in the Faculty of Law. This includes all facets of office system and workflow management, student record keeping, advising, registration, graduation, preparation of statistics, and communications.

In response to students in crisis, triages and forwards files to Local Wellness Advisor or Assistant Dean (Student Flourishing and Inclusion).

Manages the Faculty of Law internships, clerkships, and moots. Creates and fosters strong ties with alumni, recruits alumni coaches and works with faculty and external contacts to develop and support internship placements. Participates in the development and implementation of new initiatives that support that strategic direction of the Faculty as they relate to internships.

Plans, organizes, and administers academic activities and services in support of students and ensures that such activities and services remain within budgetary limits.

Serves as a resource person on Faculty committees.

May represent the Faculty of Law on EESAC and working groups (e.g. McGill Wellness, Fall Break sub-committee).

Makes recommendations to the Assistant Dean (Student Flourishing and Inclusion) regarding student appeals for special consideration in respect of Faculty regulations; recommends decisions on students’ requests for part-time status, leaves of absence, and late withdrawals.

Provides performance feedback, including annual dialogues, and reviews for supervised staff. Identifies training needs and introduces professional development opportunities in support of the needs of the unit.

Manages, and monitors financial activity for the Student Affairs Office. Participates in and oversees funding allocations for graduate and undergraduate students; identifies funding opportunities; approves staff expenses and payroll activities for temporary staff (part-time students, invigilators, and coordinators); developments and monitors budgets for special projects; and negotiates renewal of external contract(s) related to student affairs (e.g. examSoft).

Proposes budgets for approval by the Assistant Dean (Student Flourishing and Inclusion); ensures that the Student Affairs budget is planned, prepared and monitored in keeping with the Faculty’s objectives, policies and procedures, and exercises signing authority on behalf of Students for expenditures.

Manages physical resources for Student Affairs ensuring compliance with University and government regulations and exercising budgetary controls. In collaboration with the Dean of Students, Office for Students with Disabilities, and Counselling and Mental Health Services, develops appropriate accommodations for students with disabilities and other challenges/issues.

Manages the process of course scheduling, in support of decisions about course offerings and the hiring of course lecturers by the Associate Dean (Academic).
