Job Summary:
This position, working with governments in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, is primarily responsible for driving and closing business opportunities with government departments and agencies that have been identified in the Government Relations strategic plan for Canada, in support of CSA Standards. The position will also contribute to ensuring visibility and understanding of CSA Standards’ business activities and capabilities with government departments and agencies, advocating its relevant public policy positions, and developing new areas of business opportunity. The position will also bring first-hand knowledge, insight and intelligence to the strategic planning process of the Government Relations group.

Working Relationships:

- Reports to the Director, Government Relations, Standards
- No direct reports
- The position interfaces with members of the CSA Standards team, which includes Standards Directors and their staffs, Education & Services, Research, Public Policy, Corporate Marketing & Communications, and Public Policy, as well as other members of the Government Relations team.

Dimensions:

- Manages direct expense budget of approximately $75K, and as required, elements of the Directors and the Vice President’s budget (e.g. special events).
- Drives and helps close specific funding/revenue opportunities identified in the Government Relations strategic plan for government departments and agencies.
- Objectives regarding costs and funding/revenue will be established each fiscal year.
- Involves close collaboration with other groups within CSA Standards, including Standards Directors and their staffs, Research, Education & Services, Corporate Marketing & Communications.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities
- Demonstrates broad knowledge of CSA Standards, and as required the Testing, Inspection and Certification (TIC) business.
- Understands the CSA Group value proposition of business opportunities identified in the Government Relations strategic plan for Canada, and drives and closes those opportunities in support of CSA Standards.
- Leads the development of relationships and acts as the key CSA Group contact with key government department and agency officials and elected representatives, and their staffs, to effectively position the business objectives of the organization.
- Promotes CSA Group to government departments and agencies, and uncovers new business opportunities for CSA Standards.
- Monitors, advocates, and lobbies for legislation and regulation with potential impact on CSA Group business opportunities.
- Monitors international developments that may impact CSA Group, such as free trade agreements.
- As appropriate, acts as CSA Group spokesman at government hearings (e.g. House and Senate Committees).
- Working in conjunction with the Government Relations Directors and Vice President, and members of CSA Standards, supports the development of the government relations strategy.
- Stays abreast of relevant government initiatives and programs that might impact current or future CSA Group opportunities, through meetings with government departments and agencies.
- Ensures the Pubic Policy, Research and Corporate Marketing & Communications teams are aware of key government initiatives, and CSA Group’s involvement in them, so that they can be built into their planning activities and/or shared via the organization’s various communications vehicles. In this context, will be responsible for developing and executing key engagement and communications activities (e.g. government relations blog posts, organizing special events with government).
- Provides counsel at the policy, legislative and regulatory levels for issues impacting CSA Group.
- Monitors and provides appropriate counsel on impacts from key parliamentary activities, including but not limited to: Speech from the Throne; Budgets; House, Senate and Legislature Committees; etc.
