**Summary**
The British Columbia Borstal Association (BCBA) is seeking a dynamic, engaged and experienced leader who is passionate about our Mission to join the BC Borstal Association Board of Directors. All applicants are welcome, with preference given to certified accounting, online/on-demand educational programming, and/or experience with not-for-profit, supportive housing.
**Description**
**The British Columbia Borstal Association **is a not-for-profit, charitable organization that has been investing in community safety from a trauma-informed lens since 1948. We understand that trauma has a significant impact and the opportunity for prevention, intervention, and aftercare are imperative to support both individual and community wellness.
**Vision**:Building resiliency and healthier communities with less trauma and greater peace.
**Mission**: To improve personal and community wellness by providing treatment, support and education to British Columbians impacted by trauma.
**Values**:
- We believe that all people deserve dignity, fairness, and respect.
- We believe that all people can live in greater harmony with themselves and others.
- We believe that a trauma-informed approach to service supports community safety and individual wellness.
- We believe in the power of restorative justice to resolve conflict and reconcile relationships.
Our Board includes members from many different disciplines including public safety, law enforcement, finance, counseling, education, project development and human resources. Our Board is dedicated to the Borstal Mission, shaping our strategic course, and the governance responsibilities.
**All applicants must have the following personal attributes**:
- high ethical standards and integrity in professional and personal dealings;
- passion to help those in need with a comprehensive perspective on issues;
- able to discuss controversial issues with diplomacy and tact in a way that encourages dialogue;
- able to add value to a team, receptive, and willing to consider others’ views;
- no conflict of interest with the member’s obligations to the organization;
- able to carry out the responsibilities and time commitment of the role;
- commitment to continuous learning about BC Borstal Association and the populations it serves
**Our Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation**:
We acknowledge the impact on Indigenous peoples of residential schools and the systemic racism embedded in Canadian institutions, including the justice system. We acknowledge our part in those systems and, despite our best efforts, have often failed to prevent or alleviate the trauma experienced by those we serve. We accept the calls to action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (and other related reports). We commit ourselves, with humility, to be responsible for our own learning, to build relationships, and where possible to contribute to the journey of Reconciliation. We hope there will be practical ways to use our knowledge and expertise in support of Indigenous organizations and communities.
