- Monday, May 13, 2024This endowed Chair was established by the Canadian Auto Workers Union (now Unifor) in honour of Sam Gindin, who served as director of research for the Canadian Auto Workers union from 1974 until 2000. From 1985 until 2000, he also worked as assistant to the president of the union, providing strategic policy advice. Sam Gindin’s career was dedicated to the pursuit of social and economic equality and through this Chair, Toronto Metropolitan University wishes to continue its contribution to the evolving debate on achieving democracy and social justice.

The Chair serves as the centre of a social justice hub that engages academics, students, trade unions, social activists, community members and policy makers in exploring the parameters of the social justice agenda and developing a transformative vision of a truly democratic society. The Chair’s responsibilities include research, liaising with staff, faculty, students and external organizations and movements. Working closely with the School of Public Policy and Democratic Innovation, the Chair will conduct a wide range of activities related to both the scholarly advancement and practice of social justice and democracy, with links throughout Toronto Metropolitan University and with the broader community. Teaching is a requirement of the position.
