**Community Justice Worker (Peel & Dufferin) Permanent, 33.75 Hours Week - Vacation & Benefits Included**
The Community Justice Worker (Peel & Dufferin) will be responsible for providing front-line service to Elizabeth Fry Society of Peel-Halton Justice Programs - Community Justice Worker (Peel & Dufferin), Community Service Order (Dufferin), and the Stop Shop Theft Program (Peel & Dufferin).
The Community Justice Worker Program (CJW) will work out of both courts : A. Grenville and William Davis Courthouse and the Dufferin County. The CJW is an alternative to prosecution for those affected by the criminal justice system and have been charged with minor offenses. The Program accepts referrals that have been screened by the Crown as eligible to participate in a community-based alternative to the court process. This includes accused persons being held accountable for their behaviour and assigning appropriate and meaning sanctions. Ultimately, this program provides diversion options and assists individuals who comply with the program to not receive a criminal record.
The Stop Shop Theft Program (SSTP) is intended to serve as a resource and guide for facilitators to lead group participants through psychoeducational groups, as they’ve been brought before the courts facing charges involving theft from retail stores. SSTP consists of one 3-hour structured session, leading participants through a process of self evaluation, and education.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Accepts referrals from the Crown Attorney for those recommended for the program
- Facilitates SSTP groups on scheduled dates, and reports to the Community Justice Worker successful (or non-successful) completion of the program, prior to the client’s return court date
- Conducts intake appointments and arranges sanctions based on any special circumstances (i.e. location, first language, client demeanor) and with consideration given to the offence, the victim and the clients’ needs; makes arrangements with other service providers for the clients if appropriate
- Reviews and explains conditions of the program with the clients to ensure thorough understanding of their responsibilities
- Monitors the completion of the assigned sanction and formally reports back to court personnel
- Maintains accurate and up-to-date documentation, as well of statistical information for reference and recording purposes
- Ensures that the confidentiality of all client records and information is maintained
- Responds to inquiries from program participants, external stakeholders, and/or community members
- Develops and maintains positive and professional relationships with stakeholders and community partners
- Recruits and maintains students and/or volunteers to ensure consistent and supportive service levels
- Keeps abreast of trends, community resources and developments by participating in workshops, conferences, and continued professional development.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Manager or designate.
A degree and/or diploma from a University or College in a related field with experience working with vulnerable populations; prior experience working within a judicial setting is considered an asset
- The ability to maintain and encourage confident assessment, counselling and program facilitation skills in order to engage, support, and interact with clients using a trauma-informed approach
- Knowledge of the judiciary and court systems and their high-level procedures and protocols, as well as the roles of court personnel
- Strong community development and collaboration skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; proven leadership skills and strong knowledge of community resources
- Diagnostic and interpersonal skills to deal with a diverse client group in a diplomatic and non-judgmental manner
- Practical knowledge and experience administering gender-specific and responsive programming
- Strong communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills with the ability to work well and collaborate with diverse community groups and other stakeholders (i.e. court personnel, external community agencies and other key supports in the community)
- Detail-oriented and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize, multi-task, plan, and manage projects and initiatives
- Problem solving and leadership skills, with the ability to judiciously handle crisis situations with clients
- Valid First Aid/ CPR certification
- A clear Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC), within the last 6 months
- Full vaccination against COVID-19, and willing to provide proof
- Proficiency in the French Language
