**About Amii**
Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii) is one of Canada’s three main institutes for artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, our world-renowned researchers drive fundamental and applied research at the University of Alberta (and other academic institutions), training some of the world’s top scientific talent. Our cross-functional teams work collaboratively with Alberta-based businesses and organizations to build AI capacity and translate scientific advancement into industry adoption and economic impact.
**About the Role**
Amii is proud to be part of the newly launched Canadian Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute (CAISI), a national initiative to address risks in advanced AI systems and promote trustworthy AI. As the Director, AI Safety & Trust, you will play a key role in shaping Amii’s leadership in this space, ensuring AI is developed responsibly and ethically. This role is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on AI safety at Amii, in Canada, and around the world.
The position focuses on achieving excellence in five main accountabilities:

**Required Skills / Expertise**
**Key Responsibilities**:
- Develops and implements detailed proposals for AI trust and safety initiatives, including objectives, scope, methodologies, and resource requirements
- Oversees the successful implementation of Amii’s AI safety collaborations to ensure alignment with strategic goals
- Represents Amii in collaborations with national AI centers of excellence, CIFAR, and other international organizations
- Builds and maintains relationships with key industry partners, government entities, and academic institutions
- Leads Amii’s participation in global initiatives to shape AI safety standards and foster innovation
- Actively contributes to the success and influence of the Canadian AI Safety Institute through strategic partnerships
- Advocates for AI trust and safety through policy development, thought leadership, and public speaking engagements
- Contributes to the development of national and international AI safety policies and ethical standards
- Explores and secures new partnership opportunities with external groups, including government, corporate, and philanthropic entities
- Represents Amii at conferences, workshops, and industry events to build a reputation as a thought leader
- Cultivates and maintains strong relationships with Amii Fellows, researchers, industry leaders, and policymakers
- Act as a trusted advisor to team members and teams, offering guidance and insights to incorporate responsible AI trust and safety practices into their projects and initiatives
- Align team development efforts with organizational goals to ensure a cohesive and informed approach to AI trust and safety across all functions
**Qualifications**:
- Post Secondary Degree in a relevant field is required; a Masters or Ph.D. in a related field (nice to have)
- Familiarity with global regulatory frameworks and policies related to AI, data privacy, and safety standards (e.g., GDPR, AI Act, PIPEDA)
- A solid track record of advocacy and public engagement, including participation in conferences, workshops, or policy discussions on AI ethics, trust, and safety
- In-depth knowledge of the ethical implications of AI technologies and a demonstrated commitment to advancing responsible AI development and deployment
- Proven experience in building and managing partnerships with diverse stakeholders, including industry, government, and academia
- Strong project management capabilities, with experience in planning, executing, and overseeing complex initiatives across multiple teams
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex ideas into actionable insights for diverse audiences, including technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Demonstrated experience leading cross-functional teams, including researchers, policymakers, and industry partners, to achieve shared objectives
