**The Opportunity**:
Reporting to the Division Head of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine (or delegate), the Data System Abstractor and Research Assistant will assist with data collection/management. There are two large research databases within the division of Neonatal Perinatal Medicine: the Nova Scotia Perinatal Follow-Up Program (PFUP) and the national Canadian Neonatal Network (CNN) database. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

- Maintain accurate and complete data
- Assist in data retrieval and preparation of audits and reports
- Ensure work time is managed effectively and efficiently
- Ensure privacy and confidentially of all processes, including data storage
- Participate in departmental and national working group committees, as requested

The provincial Perinatal Follow-Up Program (PFUP) is dedicated to the care and monitoring of babies born very prematurely, with a very low birth weight or who experienced known or suspected brain injury at birth. The PFUP database collects maternal, perinatal, neonatal as well as long-term developmental outcomes for these children. Data abstractor responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

- Prepare charts for bi-weekly PFUP clinics
- Enter PFUP data into ORACLE database
- Coordinate and provide ORACLE training to appropriate clinical staff

The Canadian Neonatal Network (CNN) and its sister networks including: the Canadian Association of Pediatric Surgeons Database (CAPSNet), Canadian Preterm Birth Network (CPTBN) and Evidenced-based Practice for Improving Quality (EPIQ). These are large national databases that collects data on mothers and high-risk newborn infants from all 31 tertiary neonatal centers across Canada, including IWK Health. Data abstractor responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

- Screen all infant charts to determine eligibility to CNN, CAPSNet, CPTBN
- Abstract relevant clinical and administrative data from maternal and neonatal charts.
- Enter data into the appropriate database
- Collect and enter data from hospitals in Nova Scotia and PEI

**Hours of Work**:
Monday-Friday; 0800-1600

**Your Qualifications**:

- Graduate of approved Health Information Management Program or Health Profession preferred
- Working knowledge of Microsoft office (Access, Word, Excel, Outlook) required (Willing to complete on-site training with required databases) Willing to complete on-site training in ORACLE database required
- Training & experience in abstracting & coding Obstetrics, Neonatology health records preferred
- Knowledge of Medical terminology required
- Knowledge of Meditech preferred
- Meticulous attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and within context of health care team
- Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to multi-task required
- A combination of equivalent education and experience may be considered
