If so, Environment and Protected Areas has an exciting opportunity for you as Strategic Issues Manager in the Deputy Minister’s Office (DMO)

Reporting to the Chief of Staff, the Strategic Issues Manager provides issues management, advice, and coordination support to ensure smooth operations of the DMO. The position acts as liaison and key resource for strategic support, advice, direction to staff in the program areas, the Minister’s Office and other DMOs.

This is a highly visible position with broad exposure to issues and strategic direction across the department and government, providing a unique perspective to manage and oversee ministry operations in the context of competing priorities and tight timelines.

Accountabilities of the role include:

- Developing, reviewing, or approving correspondence prepared by the ministry for Minister, Deputy Minister and Chief of Staff approval, ensuring consistency with division, department and Government of Alberta policies and priorities.
- Supporting a results-based, customer-focused issues management approach by identifying and prioritizing emerging and potentially sensitive issues.
- Initiating action in collaboration with senior staff to address issues, propose solutions or recommendations consistent with ministry position, direction and goals as outlined in business plans, and communicating outcomes, where appropriate.
- Preparing briefings and background materials while ensuring communications with staff and other divisional and ministry contracts, delegating to senior divisional representatives and staff where applicable.
- Preparation, review, and edits of materials such as Minister’s Reports, Requests for Decision, briefing notes, Strategic Communications Plans, Recommendation for Orders in Council, Recommendation for Ministerial Orders, and others.
- Liaising with the Executive Advisors, Assistant Deputy Ministers (ADM), Executive Directors, and Directors on complex and sensitive issues, preparing responses as directed by the DM.
- Chairing the Executive Advisors Committee, prioritizing items for discussion and following up on actions items and assignments.
- Ensuring effective communication and information flow between the DM office and divisional units and implements actions to build team cohesiveness.
- Providing advice, guidance, and assistance to the DM, Chief of Staff and senior divisional representatives related to the formulation, review, and implementation of ministry and division policies, particularly those of new direction and programs initiated by the DM.

The position provides delegation and oversight of daily flow of DMO work to divisions and program areas to ensure it is appropriately prioritized and delivered in accordance with DM and Chief of Staff expectations.

**Requirements**:
A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as social sciences, business or communications, and a minimum of four (4) years of related experience.

**Equivalency**:
Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

**Knowledge and experience required for this role**:

- Strong attention to detail, demonstrated commitment in driving for results, and ability to work within short timeframes
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience informing and influencing teams, leadership, and senior officials
- Excellent interpersonal skills, crucial for developing strong networks that can be engaged quickly to solicit input and address issues.
