Communications Coordinator, Self-government

Salary: $58,500 - $77,000.00 per annum
**Job Summary**
Under the guidance of the Director of Self-Government, the Communications Coordinator is responsible for assisting with the communications and marketing initiatives of the WLFN's Self Government department, including content development, social media management, graphic design, and supporting a wide range of communication services. The Coordinator also ensures WLFN citizens are informed and up to date on Self Government issues and that they are aware of ways they can participate and have input into the Self Government process. This is a full-time position scheduled for 35 hours per week.
**Duties & Responsibilities**
**Self Government Communications**:
- Lead, develop, and coordinate communication policy and strategies regarding Self Government activities and issues.
- Summarize lengthy complex reports, agreements, issue/position papers, and Self Government chapters for a variety of audiences.
- Prepares all Self Government communications content, including newsletters, fact sheets, news releases, notices, social media posts, newspaper and radio advertising, and website information.
- Develops, maintains, and coordinates a contact list of WLFN members for communications and other Self Government related requirements.
- Participates in and coordinates special public relations projects on Self Government related matters.
- Contributes to NSTC newspaper, website, and social media resources as required.
**Self Government Negotiation Awareness**:
- Attends technical working group(s), negotiations, and other meetings to stay informed on Self Government issues.
- Maintains an awareness of the status of other Self Government tables as time permits.
- Shares Self Government information with the Self Government team and leadership and with community members.
**Media Relations**:
- Collaboratively work with WLFN's Marketing & Communications Coordinator to support WLFN through effective public relations and reputation management
- Develops, coordinates, and implements a strategic media plan regarding Self Government activities and issues.
- Informs the media and the public of upcoming Self Government activities including protocols and participation opportunities.
- Writes press releases for the Director of Self-Government, CAO, or Council to respond to media and public inquiries regarding Self Government activities and issues.
- Maintains contact with local reporters and journalists to develop working relationships.
- Stays up-to-date on local media coverage of Self Government issues.
- Maintains a watch of wider media coverage of other Self Government tables as time permits.
**Community Liaison**:
- Facilitate community engagement sessions to inform the community about the Self Government process and the transition to becoming a self-governing Nation.
- Evaluates and develops public education materials including brochures, information packages, flyers, and fact sheets on behalf of the Self Government department.
- Represents the WLFN interest by developing relationships with NStQ communities and gathering views.
- Assists the Self Government department and Self Government team to organize urban meetings.
- Documents and provides written summaries of Self Government meetings.
- Supports the mission, vision, and values of Williams Lake First Nation.
- Contributes to the WLFN's ongoing success by accomplishing other duties as required or assigned.

**Qualifications**
**Education**:
- Undergraduate or post-graduate degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, Political Science, or Marketing
- Visual arts, communications, journalism, graphic design, or videography diploma/certification.
- A combination of relevant professional or personal experience that enables you to dynamically tell WLFN's story.
**Experience**:
- Minimum three (3) years of relevant experience in communications, journalism/media, public relations, or a related field; particularly coordinating marketing and communications strategies and initiatives for the Self Government team, creating communications campaigns in a variety of media, and working with a variety of stakeholders.
**Knowledge**
- Understanding of laws, constitution, and legal language.
- Understanding First Nations' history, traditional lands, culture, and language would be an asset.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office software at an intermediate/advanced level.
- Knowledge in content management, communications, and desktop publishing software programs and web services (e.g. Adobe InDesign, Adobe Suite, WordPress, etc.).
