The Program Assistant at The Salvation Army Mountberry Adult Day Service is accountable to the Business Services Manager to provide excellent personal care to residents. Primary functions include providing care according to the established client care plan including all components of activities of daily living and supporting participation in recreational and therapeutic activities.

The Program Assistant is required to perform their duties in a manner consistent with the Salvation Army’s core values, ensure resident safety, and demonstrate customer service excellence while responsible for planning, implementation and evaluation of programs and services provided to the residents.

**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**:
**Client Services**
- Provides for personal care in accordance with established policy, the client plan of care.
- Contributes to and follows a plan of care to meet clients’ assessed needs.
- Is responsible for maintaining accurate and complete records.
- Contributes to positive customer service with clients and family daily.
- Deals tactfully and courteously with clients, client families, visitors, and staff in a positive manner.
- Facilitates communication in complex care issues to foster positive client outcomes.
- Establishes and sustains care in a manner that is client centered and fosters evidence-based best practice.
- Seeks direction from the Business Services Manager when client need exceeds experience or scope of practice.
- Observes, reports, records resident conditions, and follows care plans.
- Assists in maintaining an environment appropriate to meet clients’ individualized needs.

**Recreation Activities and **Dining Room Support**
- provides a safe and pleasant dining experience.
- assists clients as necessary with individually wrapped portions of food, peeling oranges, eggs in shells, cutting meat, etc.
- May conduct and assist with planned programs in response to individual and group needs and interests, in cooperation with the calendar prepared by the Recreation Coordinator.
- Assist with the preparation of the program’s physical environment and maintenance of the activity area.
- Complete and submit incident reports.

**Human Resources**
- Participates in an effective orientation, and performance management process in accordance with The Salvation Army Mountberry and Meadowlands Adult Day Services standards for all employees within the day programs.
- Identifies day program’s learning needs and communicates to leadership within the program.
- Models positive working relationships with management and co-workers.
- Demonstrates relevant understanding of and compliance with legislative knowledge of the Employment Standards Act, and the Human Rights Act, as it applies to the direct care staff.
- Perform other duties as required.

**WORKING CONDITIONS**:

- This is a full-time temporary position based on 35 hours per week for a period of 8 weeks and will be completed between July 4, 2023 and September 1, 2023.
- The Supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule.
- Ability to lift/move 10 to 19 kg.
- Frequent lifting, twisting, bending, crouching, reaching, pushing, and pulling.

**QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS**:

- Current Gentle Persuasive Approach training is an asset.
- Current First Aid & CPR Certification is an asset.
- Current Safe Food Handling Certification is an asset.
- Montessori for Dementia Care certificate is an asset.
- U-First Training is an asset.
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

**EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE**:

- Previous experience conducting craft, music, art, fitness, etc., skills is an asset.

**SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES**:

- Be available for full 8 weeks of program.
- Demonstrate effective working relationships within a team environment and work collaboratively with all staff and volunteers.
- Demonstrate leadership skills and strong oral and written communication skills.
- Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and exercise good judgment.
- Self-motivated and disciplined.
- Communicate in a sensitive and compassionate manner.
- A good listener with a genuine concern for the client/participant.
- Participate in mandatory orientation training, departmental staff meetings, professional development, and training.
- Participate in regular supervision process.
- Represent the organization in a positive, professional, and engaging manner.
- Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution.
- Work in compliance with the OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
- Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
