The Nanaimo Chamber is a not-for-profit organization comprised of businesses, professionals, residents, and community groups working collectively to ensure a healthy business base and positive socio-economic structure that benefits everyone in Nanaimo. The Chamber receives no government funding and relies solely on membership dues and fundraising events to support its activities. This independence from government funding frees the Chamber to be a strong, independent advocate on behalf of the business community, so they truly are the “Voice of Business”.

Chambers not only connect members to members within the local chamber, but members also gain access to the power and influence of a network of 420 Chambers across the country, with 192,000 businesses of all sizes, in all sectors of the economy, and in all regions of the country, through affiliation with the BC and Canadian Chambers.

The Chamber plays a key role in supporting economic development in the region by working closely with local governments, first nations, business leaders, and other stakeholders to identify and promote business opportunities, attract investment, and support job creation.

The Nanaimo Chamber is a vital and active member of the local business community, working tirelessly to support and promote the interests of its members and the wider community.

**Key Accountabilities**

The CEO of the Nanaimo Chamber is responsible for leading and managing the organization, overseeing the implementation of the Chamber's strategic plan, and promoting the interests of local businesses in the Nanaimo area. The CEO reports to the Board of Directors and works closely with the Chamber staff, members, and community stakeholders to advance its mission. The CEO will be looked upon to deliver the following responsibilities:

- Direct the day-to-day operations of the Nanaimo Chamber, including managing staff (up to 6 individuals) and volunteers, overseeing budget and financial management, and maintaining the office and building.
- Plan, develop, and propose suitable program activities, ensuring all contractual obligations are met. Implement and oversee program activities that have been approved by the Board of Directors.
- Work with the Board of Directors to develop policies and procedures that support the Chamber's strategic plan, including membership recruitment and retention, event planning, and member services.
- Provide leadership and vision to the Chamber, including developing and implementing a strategic plan that reflects the needs and interests of the local business community.
- Represent the interests of members with government officials, community leaders, and decision makers, advocating on their behalf and promoting the Chamber's mission and goals.
- Develop and manage annual budgets and business plans, including metrics for gauging successes and future opportunities that align with strategic plan.
- Build and maintain effective relationships with appropriate government officials and community leaders, leveraging those relationships to advance the interests of the Chamber and its members.
- Serve as a lead for all public relations activities, developing key messages, statements, and participating regularly in media interviews to raise the profile of the Chamber and its members.
- Attend all Board and committee meetings, providing guidance and support as needed to advance the Chamber's strategic plan.
- Actively engage the Nanaimo business and non-profit community as a brand ambassador for the Chamber, promoting the benefits of Chamber membership, listening and responding to the needs of member businesses, and generating new ideas and initiatives to ensure the expectations and interests of members are being met.
- Design and implement partnership programs that enhance the community, creating net benefits for members and the Chamber.
- Ensure accurate and current financial records are maintained and control expenditures within the defined authority; with an eye open for new revenue opportunities.
- Stay up-to-date on local, provincial, and federal business regulations and policies, advocating on behalf of the Chamber and its members as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.

**Education, Experience and Skills**
- Bachelor's degree in business, economics, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
- Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in senior management or executive roles, preferably in a Chamber of Commerce or similar organization.
- Strong business acumen, problem solving, decision-making skills, interpersonal communications, presentations and understanding of a Governance Board.
- Demonstrated experience in advocacy, public policy, or government relations.
- Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor and lead a team.
- Self-starter who can work autonomously while keeping the Board apprised of changes and opportunities.
