**Working for the Department of Oncology**

The Department of Oncology was founded in 1993 to foster an integrated, comprehensive bench to bedside cancer program in Northern Alberta promoting the seamless transition from discovery science through translational and clinical research to the best clinical cancer care for Albertans.

**Position**

This position is to support collaborative research with a focus on skeletal muscle wasting in cancer and liver disease. Radiological assessment (review and annotation of muscle on diagnostic computed tomography is used to assess the muscle mass and muscle quality and their change over time in individual patients. A database of the findings will be maintained. For patients consenting to muscle biopsy ay time of their cancer surgery or liver transplant, biological assessment will be conducted and for this laboratory duties will include receiving biopsies in the laboratory, preparing tissue specimens by freezing and fixation, conducting sectioning for light microscopy, staining for morphological and immunohistochemical analysis. Reports of results and basic descriptive and comparative statistics using SPSS to be conducted. The position will also involve participation in planning and writing of publications based on the findings.

**Duties**

- Prepare tissue specimens by freezing and fixation
- Conduct sectioning for light microscopy

- Participate in the planning and writing of publications based on findings

**Minimum Qualifications**
- BSc Biology or related discipline
- Experience in radiological image analysis (computed tomography) for quantification of skeletal muscle; precision test results available or to be demonstrated after starting position
- Experience in processing of muscle tissue to histological, immunochemical and biochemical evaluations
- Experience in immunohistochemistry and muscle histological analysis
- Lab safety, biohazard and confidentiality training complete

**Preferred Qualifications**
- Thesis-based Masters degree considered an asset
- Background knowledge in cancer and liver disease an asset
