**Role**:
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Priority Issues Coordinator works directly with the Executive Director and the branch leadership team to manage critical and emerging issues from a strategic communication and issues management perspective. The PIC is the primary link to emerging issues and activities in the branch and ensures situational awareness and information sharing to staff within. This key position collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to assess issues, determine their nature and priority, research and coordinate supporting information, and takes action to develop appropriate responses.

This position also researches and conducts environmental scanning of potential issues, provides analysis, and ongoing issues management support to ensure the effective delivery of programs and frameworks that fall within the department's mandate. This requires the individual to prepare briefings and recommendations for consideration, initiate and coordinate responses, and provide value-added information and strategic messaging in a timely manner.

As a Priority Issues Coordinator you will:

- Participate on the branch management team, identify and prioritize risks, challenges, and issues and recommend strategies to support the branch and division in achieving successful outcomes.
- Manage the flow of information and inquiries from Assistant Deputy Minister and Deputy Minister offices to the branch, ensuring inquiries are routed appropriately, responses prepared, and issues addressed
- Assist the Executive Director with developing and monitoring annual business plan for the branch. Also assist Executive Director with team building and corporate culture building program, Occupational Health and Safety program and other corporate initiatives as required.
- Coordinate in-house meetings for the Executive Director; work closely with the Executive Director and branch leadership team to determine key priorities and goals for the year.
- Remain current and informed as to Ministry issues, proactively recommend and provide an evaluation of issues and potential strategies to resolve issues.
- Track major branch initiatives to ensure timely progress; follow up on action items identified by the ADM to the Executive Director

You will act as the primary branch contact for the Assistant Deputy Minister’s Office, and other divisional branches. You will collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders to assess issues, determine nature and priority, research, and coordinate supporting information and take appropriate action to contribute to the success of the department. A strong understanding of communications, policy and departmental organization issues is required.

**Requirements**:

- A University degree in Political Science, Communications, Environmental Studies/Science, Public Policy, Business Administration, Economics or related field.
- Two (2) years of directly related experience in issues management

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Problem solving and in-depth research, writing and editing skills.
- Exceptional organization skills and attention to detail to ensure accuracy and timeliness of issue responses.
- Sound knowledge and understanding of:

- Proper English grammar and usage, as well as appropriate Canadian Press Style guide rules, and plain language GoA writing style.
- GoA and ministry internal administrative policies, processes and practices.
- The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIP) legislation.
- Planning processes in resource management (e.g. Cumulative Effects Management Strategies) and Integrated Resource Management System.
- Environmental issues and landscapes in Alberta.
- Experience in issues management and/or managing executive support and advisory role
