Reporting to the Senior Director, Student Success and Retention, the incumbent manages NouLa, the Black Students Centre, supporting the University’s commitment to enhanced Black student experience according to the recommendations of the President’s Task Force on Anti-Black Racism. They provide the University community and other units offering student support with expertise and advice related to the challenges and success of Black students at Concordia.
**PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Works closely with Concordia departments, both academic and service, to provide timely and comprehensive supports for Black students. Monitors and evaluates service performance of the Black Students Centre and student satisfaction and develops strategic plans for enhancement of Black student experience.
- Leads further development of the Centre in line with the recommendations of the President’s Task Force on Anti-Black Racism. Maintains close collaboration with the Black Perspectives Office and Equity Office, co-hosting events when appropriate and acting as a resource on issues of student experience. Ensures development of the Centre and its offerings be informed by consultations and issues arising from the BPO and Student Services.
- Provides leadership to a developing team of student services providers. Responsible for hiring, onboarding, training, assignation of work, and performance appraisal of personnel, and inspires autonomy, innovation, and adoption of best practices within an inclusive community.
- Oversees process by which eligible students register and access the Centre, including case managing non-standard, difficult and/or sensitive situations.
- Develops and enhances the Centre’s programming including the Bridge program, Graduation Celebration, Black Students Wellness Week, mentorship and internship opportunities. Builds relationships with other Concordia units and Montreal community supports for students and supports student success through improving referral to programming and services.
- Supports the delivery of services dedicated to integration of Black students into academic life. Works with university partners such as Enrolment Services, First Year Experience, Co-op and Career and Planning Services to develop transition support services for students as they enter and leave university.
- Advises University senior leadership and faculty, including developing and delivering training, on the needs and experiences of Black students in post-secondary education. Responds to the concerns of faculty, staff, students, family members, university legal counsel, Ombudsperson, Equity Office, and the Office of Rights and Responsibilities on student issues and is available for consultations with members of the university community for an inclusive Concordia.
- Works with FAAO and Advancement offices to ensure access to scholarships, bursaries and other sources of funding for Black students.
- Develops and manages the annual budget, including donation envelopes, in collaboration with the Senior Director. Approves budget expenditures for the department and oversees timesheet approvals for student employees. Prepares reports, proposals, and helps prepare funding requests to donors and services for programs related to Black students.
- Oversees communications and social media outreach efforts for the unit. May be called upon to speak to media representing Concordia about sensitive issues relating to Black students in post-secondary education.
- Represents the NouLa Student Centre on internal and inter-university committees.
- Participates in and leads various projects assigned by the Senior Director.
- Performs other duties in support of the operation of the unit.
