**Reporting To**: Director of Education and Social Development

**Location**: Remote, hybrid or local (MNC Office, #600-180 Elgin Street, Ottawa, ON)

**Position Status**: Full Time (35 hours per week), Permanent

**The Organization**:
The Métis Nation is a distinct Indigenous people recognized under Section 35 of the Canadian Constitution Act, 1982. The Métis National Council (MNC) and its Governing Members advocate for the Métis Nation. The primary mandate of the MNC is to work with Rights holders, federal and other key stakeholders to resolve systemic issues and concerns of the Métis Nation such as the fiscal relationship with the federal government; economic development; health; childcare and family services; education; environment, Métis veterans, and language promotion and protection. The MNC represents the Métis Nation both domestically and abroad and seeks to reinforce the Métis Nation’s right to self-government in Canada.

**The Position**:
As a Policy Advisor for Social Development, you will play a pivotal role in shaping and advocating for policy change that supports Métis veterans,, individuals with disabilities, and other marginalized populations. You will work closely with Governing Members, federal government agencies, Ministers and community members through technical tables to develop comprehensive strategies aimed at addressing social inequalities, promoting inclusion, housing security and enhancing the well-being of vulnerable populations.

This position requires a deep understanding of Métis history, culture, and self-determining aspirations, as well as knowledge of Canadian social support systems, policies, and legislation. The Policy Advisor must possess strong analytical, communication, and collaboration skills, along with a commitment to advancing Métis self-determination.

**Key Responsibilities**:
∞ Researching, analyzing, and developing policy recommendations on social development issues affecting the Métis Nation.

∞ Contributing to the development of long-term strategic plans for MNC's key priority of social development.

∞ Analyze complex legislative, regulatory or policy positions related to social development and provide guidance and recommendations on how to create positive outcomes for the Métis people.

∞ Building and maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders and advocating for Métis rights and interests, negotiating agreements, and fostering diplomatic cooperation.

∞ Participate in forums, conferences, and negotiations, articulating Métis perspectives, and advocating for policy changes that benefit the Métis community in the area.

∞ Conducting, monitoring, research and analyze to assess the impact of funding.

∞ Provide timely advice and recommendations to MNC leadership.

∞ Collaborating with internal departments to align messaging and ensure cohesive advocacy efforts.

∞ Develop communication materials, including briefs, reports, and presentations, to raise awareness of Métis issues among international audiences, media outlets, and civil society organizations.

∞ Monitoring the effectiveness of international advocacy efforts, evaluating outcomes, and making recommendations for adjustments or improvements to maximize impact and achieve strategic objectives.

∞ Support the work of the Permanent Bilateral Mechanism as it relates to the Social Development. file.

∞ Coordinate meetings and discussions with technical working groups and committees related to social development files

∞ Organize and coordinate conferences on behalf of the Education and Social Development Department, as required.

**Qualifications and Skills**:
∞ Bachelor’s degree in a related field and/or related experience

∞ Experience with and/or knowledge of the Métis political landscape and a commitment to

advancing Métis priorities on the national and international stage

∞ Analytical ability to quickly synthesize complex information and situations and provide

timely advice and creative, realistic and appropriate solutions in the best interests of the

MNC

∞ Experience working with and lobbying government agencies, elected representatives and

committees at a national and international level as well as knowledge of the overall

functioning of government

∞ Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to identify strengths and weaknesses and

recommend areas for improvement and growth

∞ Excellent communication skills: able to professionally articulate a position and the ability

to influence others through reasoned and well-thought-out ideas

∞ Ability to handle multiple complex projects, work well under pressure and in an environment

with fast-changing requirements

Knowledge of, and experience working with, organizations and advocacy groups within the Housing and Homelessness sector would be a considerable asset.
