Society of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Nova Scotians is a nonprofit charitable organization with the potential to serve over 23,000 people age 20+ years who have some degree of hearing loss. Incorporated in 1980, the Society is mandated to develop and manage coordinated services to assist Deaf, hard of hearing and late-deafened people in gaining full access to public, private and community services.

The Society of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Nova Scotians is committed to meeting the needs of Deaf, hard of hearing, and late Deafened persons with dignity, integrity, and respect. We are seeking a part-time (14 hours/week) Community Outreach Coordinator in our Halifax Office.

**Responsibilities**:

- Assist people who are Deaf, latened deaf, Deaf-Blind and/or hard of hearing and their families to access public and private services by direct assistance or referral.
- Act as a resource person for requests for information about topics relating to people who are Deaf, deafened, Deaf-Blind and hard of hearing through involvement with community committees.
- Act as an advocate for Deaf clients, assist with paperwork, for various programs within the community.
- Help coordinate the CVITP program (Community Volunteer Income Tax Program) and other community-based programs
- Keep accurate client-based database, records and statistics
- Must be fluent in ASL
- A willingness to participate in Mental Health education and other training
- Work within an office that provides serves to people who are Deaf, latened deaf, and hard of hearing to access public and private services
- Enhance accessibility and provide support to clients to overcome barriers within the community via one-to-one support, workshops, and interventions.
- General office administration includes reception, typing, filing, ordering supplies, data entry, etc.
- Other duties as assigned

**Qualifications**:

- University degree with a focus in community studies, psychology, or sociology.
- Must be fluent in ASL/MSL
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with professional proficiency in English with both strong verbal and written communication skills to articulate effectively with deaf and hard of hearing clients.
- Demonstrate ability to work as a team and independently.
- Sensitivity to working in a culturally diverse environment
- Flexibility to work some weekends and evenings.
- Be willing to be on call for emergency interpreting.
- Working knowledge of multiplatform messaging apps such as communication VRS, Marco Polo, WhatsApp, Messenger, etc.
- Able to handle high pressure situations and multitask.
- Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize.

**Terms of Employment**:
Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm (up to 14 hours per week) in the office.

Term position with renewal dependent on annual funding.
