The Program Assistant positions are public-facing and key to maintaining the day-to-day operations of the Root for Trees program. This role facilitates volunteer planting events, as well as guides volunteer experiential learning about the City of Edmonton’s urban forest and city-wide Naturalization.

On average, Root for Trees Program Assistants will collectively facilitate about 19 registered planting programs, and 1 drop-in planting program weekly from mid-May to mid-October. Staff also lead programming for public special events including National Tree Day. While hours dedicated to this position are largely spent facilitating plantings in the field, about 4-8 hours a week are designated for administrative duties. These duties include the collection of data (planted trees, volunteers participation), communicating with volunteer group leaders to confirm scheduled plantings and answering citizens’ inquiries.

- Safely operate City equipment, including trucks and trailers, throughout the City in a variety of circumstances
- Engage volunteers in experiential educational activities on topics such as beautification, the naturalization process, and the intended benefits
- Require the ability to communicate program goals, objectives and accomplishments to diverse groups of people
- Communicate interesting facts about the native species that are being planted at each program
- Conduct quality control to ensure plant material is planted with care
- Handle, transport, and plant native plant material in variable terrain
- Provide insights, feedback, suggestions and information to the program planning and implementation
- Manage data, information and provide adequate program statistics
- Maintain materials and equipment used for program and event delivery
- Distribute program materials
- Contribute to a safe working environment by adhering to, implementing and contributing to the development of OH&S policies
- Safety of colleagues and volunteers in the field
- Provide input into the assessment of overall program effectiveness
- Collect supplies as needed for program
- Support fieldwork, data, programming and events
- And other program and operational requirements
- Creation of social media content, newsletters, update 311 scripts, update web content and other related means of communications
- Participate in public engagement activities and events
- Assist with the planning of events by providing ideas and collecting information regarding the event plan
- Support the sourcing of vendors and supplies
- Support events as required
- Perform other related duties as required

**Qualifications**:

- Completion of Grade 12
- Completion of the first year of post secondary education in Forestry/Agriculture, Horticulture/Botany, Biological Sciences, Recreation, Education or a related field will be considered an asset
- Minimum of 1 year of direct experience leading recreational, cultural or educational programs and working directly with user groups
- Volunteer Supervision experience will be considered an asset
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR Level C are required prior to commencing employment
- Using Google Suite including Google Documents, Google Sheets, Google Maps, Google Drive, Google Forms
- Program planning and promotion through the use of social media is an asset
- Plant identification skills and experience in horticulture and/or plant care is an asset
- Experience operating mobile equipment such as truck and trailer is an asset
- Ability to provide effective supervision and leadership to volunteers
- Excellent customer service, communication, organization, prioritization and time management skills are required
- Strong administrative skills and ability to organize communications, manage event calendars and maintain schedules
- Strong written, oral, presentation and web-based communication skills
- Ability to work both independently and in a team environment. Contribute to and enable a respectful and inclusive workplace
- Strong time management and organization skills
- Physically fit and able to work outdoors (in naturalized areas) in all weather conditions
- Hire is dependent on Criminal Record Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton and is a requirement of this position, there may be a cost associated with this requirement
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
