Research Scientist Position at the Pacific Parkinson's Research Centre, University of British Columbia

The Pacific Parkinson's Research Centre (PPRC) is dedicated to the clinical treatment and research related to Parkinson's disease.

The Research Scientist will analyze clinical data collected at the PPRC.

Organizational Status: The Research Scientist reports directly to the Principal Investigator (PI).

Work Performed:

- Developing and implementing machine learning models to analyze data related to movement disorders, such as data collected from sensors or imaging studies.
- Designing and conducting experiments to evaluate the performance of machine learning models and to identify new opportunities for research at PPRC.
- Collaborating with other researchers, including neurologists and other medical professionals, to understand the underlying biology of movement disorders and to identify new research opportunities.
- Participating in developing new sensors and other hardware that can be used to collect data on movement disorders.
- Communicating research findings through publications in scientific journals, presentations at conferences and workshops, and other forms of dissemination.
- Keeping up-to-date with the latest developments in machine learning and movement disorder research and incorporating new techniques and approaches into the research program.
- Assisting in the management of the research project and mentoring junior researchers.
- Developing new algorithms and approaches for understanding, monitoring, and treating movement disorders using machine learning, including deep learning, reinforcement learning, and other advanced techniques.
- Managing data collection and conducting data analysis; developing and implementing data mining algorithms; Employing modern machine learning techniques, such as deep learning techniques, data fusion methods, and/or reinforcement learning.
- Interacting with physicians who may have collected the data or have particular hypotheses they would like to test based on the collected data.
- Preparing data for presentation in documents/talks such as research papers and grant proposals;
- Providing leadership and direct supervision to staff, including training and evaluating;
- Looking for relevant grants and funding opportunities and collaborating in proposal preparation
- Performing other research-related duties such as reviewing the research papers and giving fundamental comments and criticisms, collaborating in the editorship of the journals
- Interviewing prospective students and recruiting volunteer researchers to provide human resources for side research projects
- Negotiation with relevant industries (pharmaceuticals, health monitoring technologies) to receive financial support for our research projects

Supervision Received: The individual in this position will report directly to the P.I. in regards to database management and analysis, respectively. The incumbent will require mínimal supervision and will exercise independent judgment regarding scheduling and timely completion of tasks.

Supervision Given: Supervises Research Assistants, Graduate and/or Undergraduate students.

Consequence of Error/Judgement: Errors will increase the probability of human safety risks, cause an increase in costs of operations and management and seriously impact the effectiveness of project delivery.

Qualifications:

- Strong educational background: A Ph.D. in computer science, statistics, physics, electrical engineering, or a related field + a Minimum of 10 years experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Solid technical skills: Strong expertise in machine learning techniques and a deep understanding of mathematical and statistical concepts are necessary. Familiarity with programming languages such as Python, R, and MATLAB is also essential. (experience working with big databases and have completed requirements to all PHSA pre-requisitions for working with human data.)
- Experience in health-related research: A track record of conducting research in the health domain using machine learning techniques would be an advantage.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills: A senior machine learning researcher in the health sector must be able to communicate effectively with other researchers and healthcare professionals, as well as with stakeholders outside of the research community (working with physicians).
