**Position: Research Associate**

**Project: The Progressive Data Research project**

**Hours of work: PT - 20 hours per week**

**Status: Temporary (April 1 to July 31, with a possibility of extension)**

**Location: Vancouver**

**Job Summary**:PICS is focusing on prevention and intervention efforts that promote individual and
- community well-being, safety, and belonging in the city. PICS will work collaboratively with Vancouver
- School district, and youth to identify ways to stop youth violence before is starts and identify community
- responses that can effectively prevent its recurrence.
- The Progressive Data research project will help the City of Vancouver assess the nature and scope of
- Vancouver youth’ sense of safety and belonging in the city. The research will identify factors that are
- needed to enable a stronger sense of belonging and safety among youth in Vancouver.
- The position will entail developing focus groups sessions and conducting surveys to compose data as part
- of city of Vancouver Building Safer Communities Program.**Duties and Responsibilities**:

- conducts focus groups sessions with youth (ages 16-18);- develops detailed online survey using a variety of survey questions to collect data from a minimum
- 100 Vancouver youth;- focuses in the main barriers that prevent students from feeling safe. this could include: drugs, gangs,
- belongingness, youth safety, and other deviant behaviors;- recruits research participants, using their personal networks to share information about survey and
- focus group opportunities;- attends the focus groups sessions to help engage other students and to help create a comfortable
- atmosphere for youth to share their thoughts;- participates in data analysis and developing recommendations (a final report will be developed that

will measure youth perspectives on belongingness and a safe and inclusive community and will
identify the ways that youth believe Vancouver could achieve that safety threshold. data will be
collected from focus groups and surveys for the projects final report); and
- completes other related duties as assigned.

**Knowledge and Experience**:

- Diploma or Undergraduate Degree in criminology, social services, psychology,

quantitative/qualitative research methods, or a related discipline; or an equivalent combination of
education and related experience;
- knowledge of crime prevention, youth safety, and mental health;
- Experience working with youth;
- Previous experience with data analysis; and

- knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Office Software (Word, Excel, Teams, PowerPoint,

etc.).
**Skills and Abilities**:

- demonstrated ability to work independently with little supervision, with an emphasis on leadership,
- self-initiative, self-motivated, maturity and tact;- excellent communicator (oral, behavioral, written);
- able to work flexible work hours;
- well-organized, good interpersonal skills, ability to work with youth of varied backgrounds;
- ability to make thoughtful, informed, and thorough decisions;
- ability to exercise sound judgement; and
- able to confidently and professionally liaises with school district and community partners.

**Other Requirements**:

- some evenings and weekends may be required to meet the operational needs of the project;- reliable vehicle insured for business use and clean drivers abstract; and
- clean criminal record check (vulnerable sector).
