The Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research invites nominations and expressions of interest for an Associate Dean position, for a negotiable term length between 10 months and three years (with potential for renewal), and with a strong preference of a Sept. 1, 2023 start date (but with potential for flexibility). Time commitment will be between 50 - 75% FTE. The position includes an administrative stipend and arrangement for a teaching release. This replenishment will include the portfolio of New Program Development and Program Changes, International Agreements, and University Governance, and may also be responsible for a major initiative or project to be determined. **This competition is restricted to applicants from the College of Health Sciences.**

The Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (FGSR) provides key support for graduate education and graduate students at the University of Alberta. With central responsibility and oversight for the administration of the UofA’s graduate programs, the Faculty oversees student programs for over 8,600 graduate students in 74 academic units. The Faculty’s role is to:

- Provide leadership in graduate education, working in creative partnership with Colleges, Faculties, and Departments;
- Ensure that high standards of scholarship are maintained;
- Provide an exceptional graduate student experience through strategic initiatives in areas including targeted programming for both students and supervisors, internship placements and other professional development opportunities, and support for graduate student mental health and wellness; and,
- Administer over $28 million in scholarships and awards every year

The Associate Dean, FGSR is a member of the FGSR executive team and has a shared responsibility in the Faculty’s strategic planning. The Associate Dean will also hold the following key responsibilities:

- Work within the Faculty, and across campus to develop and maintain rigorous educational standards, and ensure effective governance and support of graduate students;
- Build productive, collaborative relationships across programs and academic units to facilitate the development and implementation of strategic initiatives that enhance graduate education and the graduate student experience;
- Work to resolve graduate program issues and student cases within an assigned portfolio of departments that align with College and Faculty disciplinary foci;
- Monitor special problem cases, and offer guidance to graduate students, supervisors, and administrators; and,

The Associate Dean is a member of the FGSR Decanal Team, and participates in key committees of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research, as well as serving as the Vice-Provost and Dean’s delegate on various University-wide committees.

The Associate Dean works closely with the Vice-Provost and Dean, FGSR, as well as with the FGSR professional staff (including the Admission, Program Progression, Awards, and Professional Development teams).
- A distinguished record of scholarly achievement, experience in graduate supervision and academic administration, and outstanding organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills;
- A creative and energetic outlook with a demonstrated interest in building the University’s Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research, a strong interest in graduate education, and a good working knowledge of the issues concerning the Faculty;
- A collegial, consultative approach that is also capable of making difficult decisions using sound judgement;
- An ability to identify, address, and resolve problems or conflicts in an efficient and diplomatic manner;
- A high standard of professionalism in personal interactions, and the desire to instill, by example, an expectation of high standards in colleagues;
- Experience with academic processes, policies, and procedures including curriculum development, teaching and learning, university governance, complaint procedures, program reviews, collective agreements, etc.; and,
- Good communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills in order to build collaborative working relationships with a variety of stakeholders, and manage difficult situations effectively
