Scope: Open Competition
Closing Date: Septebmer 15, 2024

Job Information

Job Title: Program Assistant
Classification: Administrative Support 4E
Ministry: Office of the Child and Youth Advocate
Location: Edmonton
Employment Type: Permanent
Full or Part-time: Full Time
Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week

Salary: $1,808.33 to $2,209.49 bi-weekly ($47,197 to $57,667 annually)

About Us

The Office of the Child and Youth Advocate (OCYA) is an Office of the Legislature. Our Office provides advocacy for children and youth receiving or seeking to receive services under the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act and the Protection of Sexually Exploited Children Act, and youth involved with the youth justice system. The OCYA is also responsible for providing legal representation for young people in matters related to the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act and the Protection of Sexually Exploited Children Act. The OCYA conducts investigations and reports on issues arising from the serious injury to or death of a young person. The OCYA engages stakeholders in understanding the importance of respecting young people’s individual and collective rights, interests, and viewpoints, as well as delivers public education.

The impact of colonialism continues to adversely affect Indigenous young people, their families, and their communities. Intergenerational trauma, systemic racism, and the legacy of residential schools are experienced by many Indigenous young people, who continue to be overrepresented in the child intervention system. The OCYA is deeply committed to reconciliation, and a diverse and inclusive public service that reflects the population we serve to best meet the needs of Albertans. We are committed to a workplace that welcomes, respects and values the diversity of our employees. We also support them to be actively engaged in the workplace and the work we do to meet the needs of Alberta's young people.

Role

As a Program Assistant with the OCYA, you’ll quickly learn that you don’t have to be on the front line of advocacy to make a difference in young people’s lives. Your strong administrative and organizational skills will help ensure the program area is supported in working with their partners and other stakeholders. You will collaborate with others to provide superior administrative support to the organization.

Your administrative experience includes scheduling and arranging meetings and events, managing schedules and calendars, drafting and formatting executive correspondence, documents and presentations, organizing and managing files, proofreading, data entry, and tracking the status of projects. You have excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, are detail oriented and demonstrate initiative and commitment to working in and contributing to a positive team environment. The ideal candidate will also have direct experience providing support to a program area that works with children and youth.

It is important to note that due to the nature of the work, you will be exposed on a frequent basis to sad, sometimes graphic, and sensitive subject matter concerning children and youth.

Qualifications

A high school diploma with at least two years of administrative support experience in an office setting. Experience providing administrative support to a group of professionals including, calendaring, drafting and formatting documents and coordinating travel arrangements. Strong proficiency and experience working with electronic and paper records management systems. Strong proficiency and experience with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). Strong communication skills and attention to detail.

Given the overrepresentation of Indigenous young people in the child intervention and youth justice systems, preference will be given to individuals who self-identify as Indigenous and are known to others as Indigenous or who have had extensive experience working with Indigenous peoples and communities.
