About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Occupational Health and Safety Specialist to join our Health, Safety, and Environment department at Marine Atlantic Inc.

Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluate and monitor health and safety hazards, including chemical, physical, biohazardous, and ergonomic hazards, and develop strategies to control risks in the workplace.
  • Inspect food and beverage service areas, public facilities, hotel accommodations, water systems, air quality systems, and other workplaces to ensure compliance with government regulations regarding sanitation, pollution control, and workplace safety.
  • Develop, review, and update hygiene standards, policies, and practices programs to ensure continued improvement.
  • Provide technical advice, expertise, and direction to ensure compliance with legislative requirements and conformance to industry and company standards.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of Industrial Hygiene specific initiatives and programs.
  • Complete detailed Occupational Hygiene technical reports.
  • Stay up-to-date with new developments around Industrial Hygiene legislation, trends, and best practices.
  • Build effective relationships with key stakeholders and Health, Safety, and Environment team members.
  • Inspect sanitary conditions of food services, hotel areas, and other public facilities to ensure they operate in accordance with all applicable legislation.
  • Review and participate in Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) planning and ensure flawless management of all identified Critical Control Points.
  • Educate food services staff in proper food handling, infection control, sanitation, safety, and hygiene.
  • Investigate foodborne complaints, execute food or product recalls, and condemn suspect foodstuffs.
  • Intervene and apply corrective action in situations that may present a hazard.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of educational programs, toolbox meetings, Job Safety Analysis, and general training relevant to Marine Atlantic Inc. employees, the public, and contractors.
  • Work with supervisors and managers to address unsafe work practices and ensure that information is recorded in the tracking system.
  • Provide timely response and guidance on health-related issues associated with physical, chemical, and biological materials.
  • Conduct surveys, including indoor air quality (IAQ), radon gas, radiation, noise assessments, and other hazardous substances or related safety concerns.
  • Collect samples of water for analysis, measure physical, biological, and chemical workplace hazards, and conduct safety and environmental audits.
  • Investigate health and safety-related complaints, spills of hazardous chemicals, outbreaks of diseases or poisonings, and workplace incidents.
  • Inspect workplaces to ensure that equipment, materials, and production processes do not present a safety or health hazard to employees or the general public.
  • Coordinate inspections with the appropriate regulatory body and vessel personnel.
  • Monitor the reporting as outlined in the Safety Management System (SMS) as it relates to onboard health services and identify improvements to the SMS.
  • Work with HSE to implement all new and existing programs.
  • Provide training to new hires.
Qualifications
  • University Degree or College Diploma in a relevant field.
  • Minimum three (3) to five (5) years of experience in a relevant role.
  • A combination of equivalent education, job-related training, and experience in a related position.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
  • Proficient communication and interpersonal skills, able to work collaboratively within teams and cross-functionally.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Outlook, and Excel.
  • Excellent organization, prioritization, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Motivation techniques, coaching, team building, sound judgment, strong problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Understanding of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point requirements and safe food handling practices.
  • Understanding of Canadian Health and Safety legislation (Canada Labour Code Part II or provincial regulations) and applicable Public Health legislation.
