Working Schedule & Consultant Fees: Required to work 20 hours/week with a compensation of $28.85 per hour

Language requirements: English is essential; French or knowledge of a specific Indigenous language is desirable

Cuso International's strategy for work in Indigenous communities in Canada is driven by the knowledge that was shared with us over the course of our community visits. It centers on reconciliation, mental health, strengthening social inclusion and gender equality, economic resilience through sustainable development and advancing climate action. We aim to support the important work that Nations and communities are already doing, empowering Indigenous youth, strengthening community connections, promoting cultural sensitivity and trauma-informed practices, and supporting Indigenous volunteerism. A key piece of implementing such important work is the work that has to be done internally within Cuso, changing systems, removing barriers and ensuring that Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing are woven throughout the fabric of the organization.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Northern Indigenous Program Specialist is responsible for managing and expanding our micro-grant and indigenous community programs in northern Canada, ensuring they have a meaningful impact on the communities we serve.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of strategies to identify, evaluate, and select micro-grant recipients that align with our organizational mission and values.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with Indigenous community leaders, youth, and Elders.
  • Support the end-to-end administration of micro-grant programs, including application review, award selection, fund disbursement, and monitoring.
  • Continuously evaluate the effectiveness of our micro-grants and helping grantees to overcome challenges or issues
  • Support to promote Cuso International's work, our micro-grant opportunities and other initiatives.
  • Generate spaces for grantees and other Indigenous organizations and youth groups to create and exchange

KEY COLLABORATIONS

  • VIDEA (an Indigenous and youth-led international organization that is partnering with Cuso)
  • Other Indigenous organizations and youth groups
  • Line manager and other key staff (finances, communications, etc.) at the Cuso Central Office in Ottawa

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong community tights
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Dedication and passion supporting Indigenous youth in Indigenous-led projects
  • Strong competencies in communication
  • Support projects that create change
  • Facilitation and training abilities
  • Proven ability to set own priorities and to work with minimal supervision
  • Good time management and priority-setting skills and demonstrated initiative
  • Willingness to travel as required to Ottawa, and to remote communities in Canada's Northern Territories)
  • Ability to inspire individuals and teams to embrace ways of thinking

Desirable

  • Knowledge of Cuso International's goals and approach to development work
  • French and/or knowledge of a specific indigenous language
